- Color postcard depicting the Hotel Pontchartrain from the corner of Woodward Avenue and Cadillac Square, with a streetcar and the Bagley Memorial Fountain in the foreground. Printed on verso: The Hotel Pontchartrain, Detroit's latest and best hotel, is beautifully situated on the Campus. It is ten stories high with three stories underground. This hotel was opened to the public in October 1907 and is strictly fireproof. It is a marvel of convenience, the underground portion being the most important for the comfort of the guests. Over four million pounds of steel were used in its construction. Handwritten message on verso, postmarked Jul 18, 1909.

Purdy, inviting him to a meeting in response to a letter he sent expressing interest in becoming the hotel's assistant steward of storekeeper. The letter is on Hotel Pontchartrain stationery, and is dated July 29, 1907. The letter reads: Mr. W.D. Purdy, 1159 Third Avenue, Detroit Dear Sir:- We have your letter of the 26th inst., making application for the position of assistant steward or storekeeper. - Dinner menu card from the Hotel Pontchartrain dated, Thursday, February 14, 1918. The recto lists meal options under the headers, "Oysters," "Hors d'oeuvres," "Soups," "Fish," "Special Selections," "Vegetables," "Salads," "Desserts," "Ice Cream," "Fruit," "Cheese," and "Coffee." Wartime meal stipulations are printed across the top, along with the War Savings Stamp logo: The United States Food Administration has decreed one meatless meal and one wheatless meal every day, also the use of no Beef, Lamb, Mutton, Veal, or Pork on Tuesday, no White Wheat Flour, on Monday and Wednesday and no Pork of any description on Saturday. Breakfast is hereby designated as the meatless meal and Dinner as the wheatless meal. The verso is printed with an image of a flag and a passage discussing the Hotel Pontchartrain's involvement in the United States Food Administration's conservation plan.

The table is surrounded by two chairs with leather upholstery on the seat and backrest, as well as a third chair with a triangular seat, and a semi-circular piece that extends around the chair to serve both as the arm rests and the back rest. The walls consist of tiled panels between wooden molding. Above the molding, a mounted deer's head, a mirror, and painted banner motifs bearing the text, "Bid them cover the table, serve in the meat," decorate the upper portions of the wall. - One architectural drawing entitled "Dix Ave. Elevation" and "Waterman St. Elevation." The drawing (Job 245) consists of red and black ink on linen and shows two elevation views and a wall cross-section detail for an existing 2-story hotel that was to be remodeled from 13 guest rooms to 21 guest rooms. The work was being done for "Mr. John C. Garvey, Owner, Detroit, Michigan." This drawing, shown at a scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot, was part of a set of seven sheets that were prepared by "J. Lawson Miller, Architect." Some blue, green, and yellow pencil shading has been added on the verso to highlight various architectural details. John C. Garvey was the proprietor of the Michigan Central Stock Yards Hotel which was located at the corner of Dix Avenue and Waterman Street in southwest Detroit.

Printed on verso: The Hotel Normandie, on East Congress Street is one of the older hotels of the city and has been in use for hospitable purposes for over 40 years. Printed on verso: THE HOTEL CADILLAC has enjoyed the reputation of being one of the best hostelries in Michigan. It occupies the entire frontage of Michigan Avenue between Washington Boulevard and Shelby Street and contains 300 rooms with a capacity of over 600 persons. The property was constructed by the late Daniel Scotten and is still owned by the heirs of his estate.

- One set of architectural "Specifications for Mr. John C. Garvey for a Brick Veneered and Frame Hotel Building Located on the Northeast Corner of Dix Ave. and Waterman St." The specifications (Job 245) are bound in a booklet that has two brass fasteners at the top. The cover is made of light brown paper that has a cloth backing and includes handwritten text for the title. Printed text beneath the title shows the name, "Falkinburg & Miller, J. Lawson Miller Successor Architects." The cover interior and outside back cover have printed advertisements for many contractors, tradesmen, and building materials suppliers. The booklet contains 84 pages of typewritten text that give brief descriptions of all of the materials and construction requirements for the project. An index is shown on the first page. John C. Garvey was the proprietor of the Michigan Central Stock Yards Hotel which was located at the corner of Dix Avenue and Waterman Street in southwest Detroit.

In the summer time, a pavilion, built out to the water's edge, adds to the attractions of the hostelry, which has been for the past twenty years, under the management of J. R. Hayes. - Floyd Loew, waiter and strike organizer, describes an altercation between the Waiters and Waitresses Union and members of the German American Bund when they tried to hire waitresses without going through the union. Loew also talks about how the union organized the hotels and convention halls in Detroit, strikes, sit-downs, and other labor actions, and integrating the union and organizing Black waiters and cooks as a way to prevent them from being used as scabs.

- Mitch Skory recalls his life in Lansing, MI, including establishing a television sales and service business in the early days of TV, opening several other businesses, the assimilation of the Lebanese community in the Lansing area and about relations with other ethnic and racial groups, a fire which destroyed a downtown hotel, the city phone system and party lines, the establishment of the REO manufacturing company, and the city turning Washington Ave into a pedestrian mall. Skory says that he is optimistic about Lansing's future. Skory is interviewed by Rebecca Hector-Kruth and others.
