- This collection contains reports, updates, correspondence, and CD-ROMs of various data files related to the Motor Wheel EPA Superfund Cleanup Site. The materials have been deposited over time at the Lansing Public Library (later CADL) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies for access by the public. Motor Wheel Corporation was formed in 1920 following the merger of the Prudden Wheel Company and Gier Pressed Steel and Auto Wheel. By 1934, Motor Wheel controlled approximately a third of all wheel production in the United States. Motor Wheel was purchased by Goodyear Tire in 1964, and it closed in 1975. (Information from MSU Archives Motor Wheel Collection finding aid.) The 24-acre Motor Wheel site is located at 725 West Saginaw Street in Lansing Township, extending to the north. Parts of the property were used for disposal of paints, solvents, and other wastes generated in the manufacture of wheels for the automotive industry, from about 1938 to 1978. Several site cleanup actions took place beginning in 1970, including storage tank removal and relocation of wastes off-site. In 1986 it was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) and work was carried out on the Remedial Investigation, Feasibility Study, and Proposed Plan for the rest of the 1980s. Cleanup and monitoring are ongoing. The reports and documents in this collection are a record of that work. The Forest Parke Library and Archives at CADL makes these materials available to the public on behalf of the U.S. EPA and/or the State of Michigan, but the ultimate responsibility for these records lies with the EPA and the State. - Description:
- The content of this collection centers on John R. Weaver (sometimes "John B." or "John W." according to the Lansing City Directory), a clerk at the REO Motor Car Company and its later incarnations, from 1903 to 1952. The collection is an amalgamation of personal photographs, newspaper articles mostly relating to John R. Weaver and the REO Company, and pages from what is presumably Weaver's scrapbook. The collection centers on Weaver's professional career and involvement with the REO Motor Car Company (later Olds Motor Works/Oldsmobile) and various organizations that stemmed from the company, such as the bowling team and the Quarter Century Club. He was also a member of the Elf Khurafeh, a unit of the Shriners based in Saginaw, Michigan and having jurisdiction over 26 counties in lower Michigan. All of the photographs in this collection have been digitized. Weaver began working for REO on March 1, 1903, "after a fire burned out the Detroit plant." He was hired as a shipping clerk, and was one of only 100 employees. Several photographs in the collection document his early days at REO. Eventually, he began working in the purchasing department. He was honored for 25 years of service on April 4, 1927; gifts included a gold pen and pencil set, and a bouquet of 25 American Beauties. At that time, he was second in seniority at the company to Charles Blade, of which several articles and photographs in the collection detail. Blade retired sometime between 1943 and 1947. Both Weaver and Blade received their 40 Year rings in February 1943. Weaver was active in the societies within the company. During the 1920s, he was a member of the bowling team with three other men. Several photographs and programs in the collection detail Weaver's attendance at company picnics, Christmas parties, and banquets. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the REO Quarter Century Club from the time of its establishment until his retirement in 1942. Many clippings in the collection are of Quarter Century Club meetings, Weaver's employment anniversaries, and company banquets celebrating long-serving members of REO. In a November 1942 company newsletter, the "Oldsmobile Cannoneer," he is referred to as a "veteran," though that could be in reference to his time in the company rather than military service. A photograph of a U. S. Army artillery crew firing a cannon, appearing to date circa late 1890s/early 1900s, may suggest that Weaver served in the U. S. Army as an artilleryman early in life; only his draft registration for World War II was found in genealogical sources. Two other newspaper clippings in the collection are human interest stories of American citizens of Danish descent, suggesting that Weaver may have been Danish. The pages of his scrapbook not only detail some of Weaver's milestones at REO, but several other prominent employees' as well. Charles Blade was the most senior employee of REO until after World War II. Another REO employee featured in the scrapbook is Berthold W. Nichols, who was killed by a crazed gunman in 1932. Several other notable events included in his scrapbook are the "March of Men and Motors" which took place in Detroit on January 11, 1939, and the Fisher Auto Body strike of December 1945. John Rhodes Weaver was born on September 2, 1880, in Addison, Michigan, south of Jackson. He had at least two siblings, Edward and Hazel (later Wyman). He moved to Lansing and began working for REO in about 1903. His 1904 Lansing address is listed as 417 South Sycamore Street. He married Marion (sometimes "Marian") H. whose maiden name may have been Hanse or Hansen, in about 1922, and they then resided at 526 1/2 South Grand Avenue. She was listed as a clerk at a state office. Eventually they moved to 328 Regent Street, where they lived for the rest of their lives. He retired from REO on July 2, 1952. He remained interested in historic REO vehicles after his retirement, attending several gatherings in the Lansing area. John Weaver died on September 18, 1967, at the age of 87. His wife and sister Hazel survived him. Marion Weaver died at age 80, on December 6, 1969. They are buried together in Deepdale Memorial Park in Delta Township, Michigan. This collection was obtained through unknown means, perhaps an estate sale, by David Caterino, who then left it to the Capital Area District Libraries.

- This collection contains Current Conditions Reports concerning the General Motors Lansing plants 1, 2, 3, and 6. The reports were produced for General Motors and ENCORE, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GM, as part of the initial step in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program being implemented at the facility. The reports were submitted to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality by the ARCADIS company of Brighton, Mich., in July and August of 2008. The Current Conditions Report for GM Lansing plant 1 consists of three large three-ring binders (volumes I-III). Plant 1 is located at 920 Townsend Street, between I-496 and the Grand River. It has been in operation since 1902, mainly in the manufacture of parts for and assembly of automobiles. Appendices for this report are included on CD-ROMs within the binders. The CCR for GM Lansing plants 2, 3, and 6 are combined into two large three-ring binders (volumes I-II) due to those plants sharing common boundaries and waste handling systems. The plants were located at 2801 West Saginaw Street, 2800 West Saginaw Street, and 401 North Verlinden Street on the west side of Lansing and/or in Lansing Township. All were demolished in the mid-2000s. Plant 2 buildings were constructed between 1900 and 1910; plant 3 buildings were built in the 1930s. Both ceased operations in 2006. Plant 6 was in operation beginning in 1921, and was demolished in 2008.

- "The Voices of Lansing: An Oral History" was a project sponsored by the Lansing Public Library, the History Committee of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum with assistance from the Oldsmobile History Center. Interviews took place between 1988 and 1991. It was supported by a City of Lansing Outstate Equity Grant. The goal was to create a body of oral history recordings documenting the Capital region with the following focuses: -The Library would focus on surviving mayors and government personalities. -The Museum would focus on contributors to the area automotive industry. -The Chamber would focus on leaders of business and industry, and workers long left out of printed resources. Although the project never was completed, due mostly to hangups in the transcription process, many interviews were done and have been digitized by the Forest Parke Library & Archvies at CADL in 2015. Any interview for which there is a signed release on file is available for listening online; those without releases may be accessed in the Local History Room at CADL. If a transcript or summary of a recording is available, it is also linked to its record online in PDF format.

- Description:
- This is a small collection of personal memorabilia, records and correspondence, and an oral history recording with Ernest A. "Ernie" Nostrant, who worked for Diamond Reo for many years. He was an employee during volatile times of buyouts and pension problems, and his records and interview reflect some of this upheaval. Some of the contents are restricted due to personally identifying information. The collection includes some small ephemera: three of Nostrant's ID badges (two with Diamond Reo logos; the third with "Superintendent" below his name); an employee ID card from the Diamond Reo Truck Division, White Motor Corporation (undated); a fabric Diamond Reo patch; and one of Nostrant's business cards from Diamond Reo Trucks. Some White material is in this collection: an 1968 annual report, and a 1970 stockholder proxy report. There is also a file of Nostrant's insurance policy information, pay stubs, and credit union statements. Following the failure of Diamond Reo under ownership of Francis A. Cappaert in the 1970s, there were problems with the pensions of retired employees including Nostrant. Congressman Bob Carr took up this issue as part of an amendment to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). A file of correspondence between Carr, Nostrant, and others about a class action lawsuit and legislation is part of this collection. In addition, an oral history interview was recorded by MSU student Zachariah Torrey with Ernie Nostrant at Nostrant's home in Grand Ledge, Michigan, on March 14, 2018. They discussed Nostrant's work history and the contents of this collection. The interview audio file is linked in this record. This collection may have been a garage sale purchase by David Caterino, who then left the collection to the Capital Area District Libraries. Student Zachariah Torrey assisted CADL Local History in processing this collection. Mr. Nostrant had no idea how the materials had come to be in Caterino's possession, but has allowed the library to maintain ownership in addition to adding a few small items and his oral history interview.

- This collection was generated by Lansing publisher and sports enthusiast Virgil Vandenburg primarily during the time he published the "Lansing Labor News" and the "Capitol Bulletin." There is a great deal of advertising related correspondence and sample material. Virgil Vandenburg was involved in recreation-league athletics and especially became a leader in chess activities, though his chess related information is not strongly represented in the collection. The collection includes considerable automotive industry promotional material, information on local, state, and federal labor/civil service issues, other sample publications, information on local clubs and organizations, and some personal material. There are runs of alphabetical subject and correspondence files, and a section of portrait photographs included in the collection as well.

- This collection contains files for each address that was researched toward the publication of the "Thematic Survey of Early Automotive History in Lansing, Michigan from 1890 to 1930" by the Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. The survey, which was published in July of 2003, was contracted by the City of Lansing. Supporting area groups included the Stewardship Community Board of the MotorCities-Automotive National Heritage Area, the Lansing Historic District Commission, the Lansing Planning Office and the State Historic Preservation Office, among others. Fifty-two sites comprising 60 buildings were surveyed. Twenty-six of those were determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. All 52 sites were listed in an ANHA database (not publicly available as of June 2017). This collection is organized by street address. Within each file, the following items are usually contained: -Photocopies of site from Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps -Photocopies of City of Lansing Assessor records - property and real estate inventory detailed files -Photocopies of newspaper clippings, most from the Capital Area District Libraries' biographical and subject clippings files -Printouts from the ANHA Resource Site Data database for each site Occasionally a file will also contain: -Photocopies from Capital Area District Libraries' Stebbins Real Estate Collection -Handwritten original and photocopied notes from Mannik & Smith research staff -Photocopied photographs from City of Lansing Assessor -Photocopied journal or magazine articles about businesses or individuals from a variety of sources Within the files, there is a great deal of overlap and duplication due to the complex history of automotive and related businesses in the Lansing area.

- Description:
- This collection contains a wide range of newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and other periodically-published literature from the greater Lansing area. The materials are are a mix of general news (some specific to certain areas of Lansing or other nearby communities); industry and in-house publications; club or organization newsletters and papers; marketing and advertising magazines and newsletters; or political papers. Most are loose individual issues but some of the titles have been bound and/or are on microfilm. Some are very fragile and cannot be photocopied or scanned, but camera photography may be possible. For several titles, we only have a single issue, but for titles with a range of issues/years, there are often missing issues. See the container lists for each title for complete holdings. The collection does not include large runs of the major Lansing newspapers, such as the State Journal, which are available on microfilm or online through library or other databases. Container lists are updated as we add new titles and issues to the collection.
