- Two groups of Italian prisoners at Mauthausen are stripped to the waist to show the effects of tuberculosis on their decimated bodies. Tuberculosis was a serious problem in prison camps during World War I and especially bad in Austrian camps.

- This view of the hospital ward at Czersk shows a room full of sick and wounded prisoners. At the back of the room with the white armband is William Lawall, an American YMCA secretary visiting the camp. He is talking to a prisoner of war in the presence of a German interpreter.

- German doctors have isolated these Polish civilians on the suspicion that they have been exposed to cholera. These patients live in the tents but have to be quarantined to prevent a potential cholera epidemic. Cholera was a serious problem the Germans encountered in Russian Poland.

- Notes:
- Wounded British prisoners sit in a hospital tent behind Turkish lines in Gallipoli during the Dardenelles campaign in 1915. The tent flaps are open to provide some ventilation for the POW's. Although the campaign was bloody, the Turks took relatively few prisoners during the battle.

- These prisoners of war are recovering from wounds or illnesses in the hospital ward at Goettingen. All of the beds have patients, but they are sitting up and appear to be on the mend. In addition, the ward appears to be well stocked with supplies and staff.

- Exterior view of the disinfection station of an unidentified Austrian prison camp. Allied POW's reported to this station when arriving at a prison camp. Austrian doctors identified sick prisoners for quarantine and disinfected healthy POW's to prevent the outbreak of epidemics within the prison camps. Prisoners' uniforms were disinfected and the men subjected to baths, showers, hair cuts, and delousing.
