- Grand Rapids achived more than its quota of 100 recruits for the Navy as the whirlwind enlistment campaign closed on August 12, 1942. A "battleship" on wheels was convoyed down Monroe Avenue by a police car. Honorary "recruiterettes" from the A.B. Marcus Show of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" playing at Ramona Park "manned" the ship and showered passersby with leaflets describing "life in the Navy".
