In this wood block print, a French prisoner tills the soil with a pair of oxen led by a German woman. Women often took over the care of farms when their husbands were mobilized for military service.

2. Russian POW Plowing a Field at Muensingen

Notes:: A Russian prisoner is hard at work ploughing a field behind a team of horses under the walls of Lichtenstein Castle near Muensingen. Allied POW's supplemented local agricultural labor which allowed the Germans to maintain food production despite the mobilization of farmers into the German Army. This prisoner is leading a pair of horses; most farmers used oxen due to the army''s demand for horses at the front.
