- German troops supervise Belgian prisoners in the construction of a new line of trenches outside of Brussels in 1914. Note that the trenches are not dug in a straight line to prevent enemy troops, who seize a part of the trench, from firing the length of the defensive line. Forcing POW's to construct fortifications was a violation of the Hague Conventions. This photograph may have been retouched--note the prisoner in the foreground. He appears as a shadow of a sentry in other copies of this photograph.

- This photograph shows the model of the monument commissioned by the International Committee of Soltau in memory of the Allied dead in the Soltau cemetery. The Camp Committee raised the funds to erect the memorial from the proceeds from entertainment programs.

- French prisoners enjoy a croquet match in the prison compound at Muenster III. These types of games helped POW's pass their time in captivity. One of the administrative buildings stands in the background beyond the camp fence.

- An Austrian guard leads a group of Serbian women and children to a collection point, where they will probably be sent to a civilian detention camp. Austrian soldiers caught these women carrying weapons.

- A Roman Catholic priest delivers a funeral service for an Italian prisoner of war at a cemetery near an unidentified Austrian prison camp. The POW's comrades attend the service and the casket is decorated with flowers and ribbons.

- The prison orchestra at Doeberitz, composed of British prisoners, is about to give an outdoor concert in front of a barrack. Prisoners are equipped with a wide range of musical instruments and have wooden music stands, most likely produced in the prison carpentry shop. Note the camp bulletin board on the wall behind the orchestra which announced news and orders.

- A group of prisoners exercise outside of their barrack with light weights at Goettingen. Calisthetics kept the men physically fit during their incarceration.

- A group of interned Polish officers stand by their barracks in the prison compound at Zurawica. The Austrians interned these members of the Polish Legion after they refused to take an oath of allegiance to the new Polish Regency in Warsaw in October 1916.

- Under the direction of Austrian sentries, Russian prisoners conduct preliminary cleaning of their clothing as the first step in the disinfection process. The POW's then proceeded to the disinfection station for a serious cleaning.
