The Association, on the other hand, focused on the future welfare of these men and their families through educational programs.

- A prisoner of war works in an Association library in an unidentified Austrian prison camp. Books and journal articles provided critical mental diversions for men incarcerated behind barbed-wire. Reading was not only a pastime; prisoners could read about technical and professional issues to improve their employment opportunities after the war and better support their families.

- Max Reiser, a Swiss YMCA secretary, sits in the center (wearing the bowler hat) at a table with Russian POW's in the prison compound at Reichenberg. Reiser appears to have just distributed books to the prisoners, which were often in short supply in prison camps. The prison censor stamp indicates that the censor approved the photo on 17 April 1918.

- Six British officers occupied this room at the officers' prison camp at Friedberg. In comparison to the enlisted men, officers enjoyed a much higher standard of living. They had access to furniture, standing closets, and desks in addition to a large common table. They could also decorate their room with pictures and maps and a guitar hangs in the corner.

- This photograph shows a classroom in a YMCA hall in an unidentified German prison camp. Russian POW's are learning how to read from fellow prisoners. The class is obviously popular--students must sit on the floor because there are no empty seats in the room.

- Seven Russian officers shared this room in the prison camp at Friedberg. They enjoyed individual beds, several chairs and tables (one with a table cloth), standing closets, and individual cupboards, a far better standard of living in relation to enlisted prisoners. The inhabitants decorated the walls with maps, publications, and pictures and a guitar on the wall in the corner.

- Five French prisoners sit at a table reviewing a lesson after a hard day at work. Their quarters reflect a degree of comfort in that they have access to a table lamp, stationery, and tobacco (two POW's are smokinkg pipes). Many of their belongings hang on the wall or sit on shelves. Given their standard of living, these men may be French non-commissioned officers.

- French-speaking Belgian prisoners of war lived in this barrack at Goettingen. The Walloons' facilities were comfortable; they had access to desks and a large collection of books. Their walls are decorated with a number of pictures. Goettingen was a propaganda camp for Belgian POW's, who received special privileges during their incarceration.

- Social workers and neutral inspectors often visited prison camps to meet prisoners. In this wood block print, a social worker, probably a YMCA secretary, distributes books to French and Russian prisoners of war at Muensingen. Books were important for entertainment to help POW's pass their time and to support education programs.

- Four Russian officers relax in their quarters in the prison camp at Koenigstein. Their table is covered with a nice white linen, a table lamp, a double tea pot, and desert dishes. One prisoner reads a newspaper, while the officer behind him appears a bit bored. The standard of living enjoyed by officers was far superior to the lifestyles of enlisted prisoners.
