- A group of British and Russian officers relax outdoors at the Luebeck military hospital during their recovery from wounds or illnesses. German medical authorities had to treat Allied wounded as well as tremendous numbers of wounded and ill German troops by the end of the conflict.

- A Russian POW is about to be lowered into a grave for his final resting place at the prisoner of war cemetery at Koenigsbrueck. The cemetery is lined with fir trees and a priest officiates the service at the foot of the casket. The dead prisoner might have been a Pole as reflected by the Latin cross used in the ceremony.

- Russian prisoners stand inside their barrack in the prison camp at Cottbus in this Red Cross post card. The barrack is extremely crowded as prisoners sleep in triple-tiered bunk beds. This camp suffered a typhus epidemic and the cramped conditions undoubtedly contributed to the spread of the disease. Red Cross officials inspected sanitary conditions in both Allied and German prison camps and took photographs to support their findings.

Most prison camps were self-sufficient in terms of employing prisoners with trade experience. These tradesmen helped keep the camp running while improving the living standards of the prisoners.

- German troops are in hot pursuit of fleeing Russian soldiers and cavalrymen during the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia at the end of August 1914. The Germans destroyed the retreating Russian Second Army after the Russians invaded East Prussia.
