The fire tug, stern facing the camera, is being side-launched and is kicking up a splash at Wyandotte's Detroit Shipbuilding Company. Crowds are visible along the sides of the dock, as well as on the roof of a structure in the foreground. A sailor, adjusting his footing, is on the deck of the JAMES BATTLE. "Detroit Photographic Co." is written in the lower right corner of the print. "With compliments of Wm. Cason," handwritten on verso. Matting is green cardstock.

The freighter has been side-launched into a slip, and water splashed from beneath it. A group of people brace themselves on board the freighter near its stern. A group of spectators watch from the scaffolding beside the slip, and below near the edge of the slip.
