Calling them the "9/11 generation," Obama describes the role Marines played in the early response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and their continued role in protecting the nation. He praises individual Marines and their families for their service. Obama calls on the Marines and sailors to help in the fight against sexual assault within the ranks saying that such assaults are undermining the effectiveness of the military. He talks about steps his administration has taken to help veterans find jobs after their service is completed.

- Dr. David Hamilton Golland, professor of history at Governors State University in Illinois, delivers a talk entitled, "Building affirmative action from the ground up : the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the construction industry." Golland discusses segregation and conflict, protests against segregation in the building trade unions, and how some employers and their unions adapted to integration while others resisted. He explains the small inroads made by African-Americans prior to passage of the Civil Rights Act and how the Act made integrated unions possible. Gollard describes the creation of the Cleveland Plan and the Philadelphia Plan, and Federal officials actively fighting affirmative action plans. Gollard answers questions from the audience. Golland is introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck. - President Barack Obama speaks about his jobs plan and the economy at Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School in Columbus, Ohio. Obama praises the school and says that there are many schools in the U.S. which could benefit from the type of renovation the bill outlines and that many construction workers would be put back to work if the bill passes. He urges Americans to tell their members of Congress to pass his "American jobs plan", saying that "the time for gridlock and games is over and the time for action is now." Obama declares that the bill, if passed, will create jobs for returning veterans, provide tax cuts for working people, and stimulate the economy. The crowd chants "pass this bill" at several intervals.

- Author, poet, artist and journeyman electrician Susan Eisenberg delivers a talk titled, "On equal terms: women's struggles in the construction workplace". Eisenberg talks about the history of women in construction and building trades, apprentice programs, and government influence. She talks about the nature of the work, the danger, job insecurity, wages and benefits. Eisenberg says that women have had a difficult time being successful in the face of continued discrimination. A question and answer follows the talk and then Eisenberg leads a tour of her display in the Michigan State University Museum. Eisenberg is introduced by Professor John P. Beck, Associate Director, Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. - Wayne State University Professors of History Elizabeth Faue and Josiah Rector deliver a talk entitled, "The Precarious Work of Care: OSHA, HIV/AIDS, and Women Health Care Workers, 1980-2000". They discuss worker exposure to pathogens, over work, poor training and the lack of oversight by regulatory agencies in the healthcare industry. Rector and Faue describe safety advocacy by unions, applicable legislation enacted in the late 1980s and attempt to explain OSHA's preoccupation with industrial and construction workers at the expense of healthcare workers.
