- Description:
- Charles Sherwin Chapman (1864-1912) was born in Vermont and helped to establish the Western Knitting Mills in Rochester along with his brother, William Clark Chapman. He married Minnie May Robbins in 1891 and had two children, Frank and Doris. He had an estate built on the north end of downtown Rochester in 1899, designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn. Sometimes referred to as Oak Bluff, the residence remained in the Chapman family until the 1960s, when it was sold for redevelopment. It was demolished in 1968. - Photograph of Samuel M. Gibbs (1832-1901). He was married to Laura M. Kelsey in 1857. Born in Canada, Gibbs moved to Avon Township and lived with his in-laws shortly after his marriage. - Description:
- Born in 1863, Bertha Van Hoosen went on to become a world-renowned surgeon. During her 61-year career, she traveled to universities and hospitals around the world lecturing and demonstrating the medical techniques she developed and perfected. Her list of accomplishments includes the development of the anesthesia Scopolamine Morphine, for use during childbirth, the buttonhole appendectomy, the founding of the American Medical Women's Association, and the use of sterile conditions during surgery. Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen died in 1952 but her family home is now the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm.
