- British prisoners eat their lunch of soup at outdoor tables in the compound at Doeberitz. This photograph was taken early in the war as the British soldiers are wearing pre-war issue field hats, are eating outdoors, and live in the tents behind them. The prisoners had not yet constructed the wooden barracks which would be their homes for the rest of the war.

- Russian and French patients in the hospital ward at Friedrichsfeld peel a basket of potatoes outside in the hospital courtyard. Preparing daily rations was a major undertaking in German prison camps.

- A photograph from the watch tower in Buetow provides a general view of the prison camp, including the wooden barracks (note the barrack under construction in the background). The Russian prisoners have dug trenches to store the mountains of potatoes in preparation for the long winter. They are working under the direction of German non-commissioned officers. Potatoes were the primary source of nutrition for Allied POWs in prison camps.

- Four Russian officers relax in their quarters in the prison camp at Koenigstein. Their table is covered with a nice white linen, a table lamp, a double tea pot, and desert dishes. One prisoner reads a newspaper, while the officer behind him appears a bit bored. The standard of living enjoyed by officers was far superior to the lifestyles of enlisted prisoners.

- French and British prisoners of war sit and peel potatoes as cooks stir the soup over the stoves. These POW's have a lot of work to do given the vats full of potatoes. It was imperative for the camp kitchen feed thousands of prisoners three times a day to keep all of the POW's healthy.

- French officers participate in a class in their dining hall in the prison camp at Halle-am-Saal. Courses provided prisoners with mental diversions and the opportunity to improve themselves for better employment opportunities after the war.

- French prisoners of war line up to buy refreshments at the canteen in the prison compound at Erlangen. The canteen appears to be well stocked with provisions, suggested by the goods in the window. French and Russian prisoners relax in the shade of a shed to the right. A group of POW's in the middle of the photograph are in a playful mood; one of the French prisoners gives his fellow inmate a pair of "horns" with his fingers.

- Russian prisoners work in the Records Office in the prison camp at Purgstall. While some of the POW's are working, one is warming water on the wood stove, another is drinking a cup of tea, and one appears to be dealing with an itch in his boot with a stick. The Records Office was an important part of the general administration of a prison camp.
