Area, 11.91 square miles. Altitude above sea level, 863 feet. First house erected in 1843. Became Capital City by act of legislature in 1847. Incorporated as a city in 1859. First railroad entered Lansing in 1863. Lansing gets its name from Chancellor John Lansing of New York. Named by early settlers from Lan­sing, New York, who wished to preserve the name of their former home. State Capitol Building completed in 1879 at cost of $I,510,130. State Office Building completed in 1922 at cost of $2,857,500. Public Schools, 28. Parochial Schools, 6. Churches, 80. Parks, 900 acres. New Federal Building erected in 1933 at cost of $850,000. Lansing has one national and two state banks, all members of the Federal Reserve System. It is also the home of a strong trust company, and three strong building and loan companies. Lansing is one of the leading convention cities of Michigan. Its hotels attract many conventions and make a fine stopping place for tourists on their way to the playgrounds of Michigan. Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, located in East Lansing, was the first land grant college in the United States founded in 1857. Today it is one of the most progressive and rapidly growing educational institutions in the United States. LANSING IS A CITY OF DISTINCTION Lansing's school system, valued at nearly $9,000,000 is entirely debt free. While the City of Lansing has a small outstanding bonded debt, it is en­tirely offset by a reserve invested in government bonds earmark d for debt retirement. This means that Lansing is in the best financial condition of any city in the United States with over 30,000 population. Ingham County is also debt free. LANSING is served by the Michigan Central, New York Central, Pere Marquette and Grand Trunk Railroad lines has bus and truck transportation to all important points - has a modern airport and is served by Pennsylvania Central Airlines. LANSING has an average mean temperature of 63.5° in summer and 24.2° in winter. Rainfall 145 days average . LANSING has a municipally owned electric light and power system offering an adequate supply of power for industrial and residential uses. There is also an abundant natural gas supply. LANSING has a $1,000,000 sewage disposal plant. LANSING has a water conditioning plant which makes its already excellent ground water suit­able for industrial uses. LANSING h a s over 150 miles of paved streets and is the hub of an extensive system of paved highways leading to every section of Michigan. LANSING has 4 municipal golf courses numerous playfields — and excellent parks including the popular Potter Park Zoo. LANSING has diversified industries and is the home of some of the best known products in the auto­motive field; Oldsmobile cars, Reo Speed Wagons and Busses, Duplex Trucks, Motor Wheel and Fisher Body products, and many others. LANSING has a large industrial payroll augmented by that of the State Government and its various branches; also by payrolls of Federa l Offices, State Institutions and by that of Michigan State College with over 6,000 students in the last pre­war year. LANSING, due to its fine stores and excellent loca­tion, is the trading center for 35 townships, and is within easy access of 5 counties with a total population of 172,000. LANSING has strong and aggressive Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. organizations. LANSING in 1943 was America's safest city in the 50,000 to 100,000 population class.
