Pontchartrain Hotel; Detroit; Old; Showing; Hammond Building.
- Description:
- Exterior view of the Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, Michigan, designed by George D. Mason with the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument on the left. "Erected in 1907 to replace the old Russell House, it was located on the southeast corner of Cadillac Square and Woodward Avenue, the lower three floors were rusticated and the entrances were flanked by rusticated Italianate columns, above this the main mass of the building was too severely plain to suite the prevailing taste, accordingly when five stories were added above the cornice in 1916 a mansard roof with ornate dormers was superimposed ... upon its completion the hotel assumed an important role in the social life of the city, gala events took place in the glow of Tiffany lighting fixtures amid a forest of potted plants," from "The Buildings of Detroit: A History," by W. Hawkins Ferry.
