- Designed to help mothers teach their children to read. The 54 plates contain 324 illustrations. Accompanied by an 8 p. "Advertisement," and 5 cards in various sizes: a folded card of consonants followed by blank squares, vowels "to place after the consonants," an alphabet "for cutting into single letters," "A frame on which to place the moveable letters for spelling words," and a card with 3 rectangles to be cut out "for concealing the cuts till the names have been read." Originally issued in a wooden box, Cf. Welch for extensive description. Plates number XXXVII-LIV correspond with those in The father's gift, published by Jacob Johnson, 1804.

It has an illustrated title page printed in colors and ornamented end-papers. It was printed in Great Britain. The content was selected from "Poems and ballads, second series" (1878), "Tristam of Lyonesse and other poems" (1882), "A century of roundels" (1883), and "Poems and ballads, third series" (1889) and was supplemented by the cycle of poems called ûA dark month."ü cf.
