- Description:
- Developing countries have now become increasingly aware of the importance of implementing development plans that are based on the aspirations of people, if poverty is to be significantly reduced. This paper thus proposes a broad, appropriate and practical strategic approach which aims to alleviate poverty in Zimbabwe through a reorientation of conventional development strategies. Emphasis is placed on basic needs fulfilment as an indispensable prerequisite for socioeconomic development. The core of the paper is a realistic analysis of structural inequalities which must be tackled at national and global levels to ensure that 'Growth with Equity,' whilst safeguarding the environment. The role of social work education and practice in meeting the exigencies of the moment is also outlined.

- Description:
- A complex give-and-take relationship characterizes the way female heads of household in Masvingo balanced their relationships in town and countryside. My respondents employed a double-rooted strategy that entailed the use of urban kin to gain a foothold in town and at the same time the use of rural kin to help maintain the family, children and the elderly in the village. The women’s strategy was also characterized by less instrumental considerations such as supporting rural kin and maintaining ties of affect and culture. However. because survival in town is difficult, the women expected to return to the village when their working lives were over and they therefore made strategic moves that ensured easy entry into the village when the time finally arrived. In view of the choices made by the women heads of households in this study, it is imperative for policy makers to arrive at policies that take into account double-rooted strategies.

- Description:
- This study was carried out between October and December 1999. It looks at the nature of the literacy activities, successes and problems faced by the Adult Literacy Organization of Zimbabwe (ALOZ) in its efforts to spread literacy activities in the country. Data was collected by means of interviews and consultation of literature at the ALOZ offices. The study established that, while some successes have been scored, the organization faces various problems. This study makes recommendations that could redress these difficulties.
