A large image of City Hall is in the center, as viewed from Campus Martius, facing southwest. The McGraw Building behind it is partially visible. Michigan Central Station, identified here as the "M.C.R.R. Union Depot, on the southwest corner of Third Street and West Woodbridge Street is at the upper left in a rectangular frame. Below it, is the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Campus Martius, and the side of the Russell House in the background, framed in a circle. At the upper right, is another rectangular panel, this one depicting the pumping station and tower in Water Works Park. A circle bearing the image of a five story building with a dome-shaped tower, labeled "Y.M.C.A. Building Detroit." "Copyrighted 1887 by Ward Bros. Columbus O." printed in lower right corner.

Pedestrians walk along the sidewalk outside of it, while a streetcar pulled by a horse with a rather wide gait, speeds past.

- Detroit Fire Department appointment certificate issued to Aroulet Richmond of Eagle Company No. 2, dated October 1843. The certificate is signed by Common Council clerk Robert E. Roberts, Fire Department President Chauncey Hurlbut, and Fire Department Treasurer Mason Palmer, and bears both the embossed seals of the Fire Department of the City of Detroit, and of the City of Detroit. At the top, an engraving by George W. Hatch, based on a painting by Henry Inman, captioned "Protection and Benevolence," shows the Roman god Neptune receiving a pair of keys from a woman, who wears a crown, holds a caduceus and stands beside a shield, possibly intended as either Minerva or Mercury. To their right, another woman hands a document marked "The Department Fund," to another woman, dressed in black, who sits cradling a baby. An engraving, credited to N. Gray, of a fire engine labeled Eagle Company No. 2 is at the bottom of the document.

The State Savings Bank is at the top right. The Campau Building is at the bottom left. The Detroit Free Press building is at the bottom right. And the Wayne County Savings Bank on Congress Street is in the center. Each frame is drawn as a sheet of paper with curling edges, and vines curve around and over several of them.

At the top is the entrance to Fort Wayne, with a lone figure standing in the gate, and the roof of the barracks visible over the wall. The next panel down shows the officers' quarters of Fort Wayne. The housing along officers' row is at the left, the parade ground is on the right, and Gibbs Street runs along the center, where several figures are walking. In the next row down are two smaller images--the Centre Park Library, and Capitol High School. The bottom row again contains two images--the Thompson Home for Old Ladies on Cass Avenue, and the Home for the Friendless on Warren Avenue.

The long image at the top right is a scene, captioned, "Detroit harbor showing water front of city and character of shipping." Several dock workers move bags and barrels at the bottom, while in the background, sailing ships and steamships travel along the river. Below, another long panel depicts a north-facing view of Woodward Avenue, extending from Campus Martius. Shops on the corner of Michigan Avenue, and Woodward Avenue, including Hudson and Symington are depicted. The Opera House is also pictured, housing J.L. Hudson's. An optician, Hull Brothers Family Groceries, and Chas. A. Werner Glassware are depicted as well. Several moonlight towers are visible in the distance. Harper Hospital is in the topmost of the three panels, arranged vertically on the far right. Below are the police headquarters at Bates Street and Farmer Street and the house of correction at the present site of Eastern Market.
