Four men stand along the building's front steps, where two children are sitting. A handwritten on the verso elaborates that this was taken c.1873-7 and is the former St. Joseph's Lutheran Church at Monroe Street and Farmer Street. However, this structure is identified as St. John's German Evangelical Church in Silas Farmer's History of Detroit and Wayne County and Early Michigan.
