- Description:
- Tom Marvin, professor of English and American Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) delivers a talk entitled, "Occupy the University: Putting Student and Labor Activism in Perspective". Marvin suggests that public education is under attack by Neo-liberalism with its demand that all human activities justify themselves based on a narrow conception of profit and loss. He explains how and why it is important for students and labor unions to work together to affect the affordability of higher education as well as the working conditions of faculty and staff. Marvin uses the tactics and goals of the recent "Occupy Wall Street" movement and juxtaposes them against corporate interests and influence in public education institutions. A question and answer session follows. Marvin is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held at the MSU Museum.

- Description:
- This paper focuses on work attitudes and life goals of youth in Zambia. More specifically the discussion deals with whether the youth have their own goals or accept societal ones, what they consider to be important means to success, and whether these are in line with societal prescriptions and norms, and their feelings about work and their general occupational preferences. The main concern was to ascertain whether there is inconsistency between culture and the social structure, ie between the cultural goals of material success and culturally approved means to achieve those goals.

- Description:
- This paper examines current and potential AIDS policy, and its orientation, at the workplace in Zimbabwe, and looks at the degree of concern that commercial companies have about AIDS. All 94 companies studied expressed some concern about AIDS, but only one third had developed a specific AIDS policy, and two thirds had begun AIDS education programmes. Major concerns expressed by the companies included the recruitment of skilled labour; rising insurance, health and pension costs; loss of time and productivity; and lowered morale. Twenty two per cent of them had some form of HIV screening in place, and 41% thought preemployment screening was justified. The paper notes current educational initiatives and makes recommendations for supportive and coordinated policy development.
