- Hazel Christenson recalls her childhood and youth in Minnesota, becoming a teacher in 1929, and coming to Lansing, MI in 1945 to teach in the Lansing school district. Christenson explains why she later accepted an overseas teaching position in Germany, saying that she wanted to see the places she had read about all of her life and her family's native Sweden. She describes her teaching duties at the U.S. Army base in Bremerhaven, her quarters, sanitary conditions, her pay, opportunities to socialize with U.S. Army officers and the devastation of post-war Germany. She also talks about coming back to the U.S. in 1952, the rough passage, and returning to her teaching position in Lansing. Christenson is interviewed by Elsie Hornbacher who shares some of her memories as she talks with Christenson.

- Jamie Monson, professor of History and Director of the African Studies Center at Michigan State University, presents a discussion entitled, "Putting Two Continents on Track: African and Chinese Railroad Builders during the Cold War". Monson discusses the historical context of the relationship between Africa and China beginning with the construction of the TAZARRA Railway connecting Tanzania to Zambia, a pan-African project which China was deeply involved with. She focuses her history by exploring the labor conditions experienced by the laborers building the railway and uses clips from oral histories she has collected to illuminate her arguments. Monson answers questions from the audience. She is introduced by John Beck, professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU African and Asian Studies Centers, the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. - First Lady Michelle Obama kicks off a ceremony to sign the VOW to Hire Heroes Act. She jokes about the President then describes the positive aspects of the bill and the commitments she and Jill Biden have secured from thousands of businesses to hire veterans. President Obama also talks about the tax credits companies will receive when they hire veterans, the numbers of vets looking for work, and the additional initiatives he has taken by executive order to help unemployed veterans connect with employers. He greets those in attendance on the stage then signs the bill.

- Description:
- Frances Barnhart talks about her brief career at the REO Motor Car Company, in Lansing, MI, from 1942 to 1953. Barnhart describes growing up in Lansing and going to the REO Clubhouse as a child, working at Kresge's in downtown Lansing, and finally being hired into the REO Navy Department to make make bomb fuses during the war. Barnhart describes the many family connections that brought her to the plant, earning 65 cents an hour, piece rate, safety issues, and being one of the older women to work at REO. She says that she moved to the lawn mower line after the war, met her husband, was soon laid off and declined a callback in 1959 to raise her family. The interviewers are Shirley Bradley and Lisa Fine. Recorded as part of the REO Memories oral history project.

- Wayne State University Professor of Political Science Amy Bromsen delivers a talk entitled, "'They all sort of disappeared': the early cohort of UAW women leaders". Bromsen recounts the history of women in UAW represented workplaces and the associated separate pay scale, available jobs, and other discrimination. She describes attempts by UAW President Walter Reuther to address gender discrimination in the union, the creation of the UAW Women's Department, and the resistance these efforts met in the male dominated organization. A question and answer session concludes the session. Bromsen is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. - Colonel Melissa Lee (U.S. Army Reserve) talks about her working with private contractors to serve military units in war zones and then introduces President Barack Obama and the First Lady. Michelle Obama announces that the corporations that make up the American Logistics Association have committed to hiring 25,000 military veterans and spouses over the next two years. President Obama explains that hiring veterans makes good business sense and that veterans bring extraordinary skill to the work place. The event is held at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, VA as part of the Presidential bus tour on jobs.

- President Obama speaks to troops at Fort Bliss, Texas on the two-year anniversary of the end of the combat mission in Iraq. Obama declares that part of ending wars responsibly requires standing with and supporting those who have served. He pays tribute to the soldiers from Bliss who have served and those who will not return. Obama announces a new executive order on mental health services for veterans as well as hiring programs that have found jobs for over 100,000 veterans.

He says that investments in the auto industry are helping create and save American jobs and he praises workers and the products made at the plant. - Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein delivers a talk entitled, "When good jobs go bad: globalization, de-Unionization and declining labor standards in the North American auto industry". Rothstein compares three General Motors auto plants around the world while talking about the changing nature of jobs and the impact on work in the auto industry in the face of a globalization of the manufacturing economy. He describes good auto industry jobs which provide access to the middle class, but says that these jobs are getting steadily worse. He calls for an international labor standards structure to protect workers. A question and answer session concludes the session. Rothstein is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck.
