- Eight sheets joined by parchment tie in upper left corner., Eight parchment court rolls, folded, relating to West Hanningfield, Essex, all of which are contemporary with one another and are joined together by a single parchment tie. Extensive damage to the membranes of several rolls with significant loss of text., Written in English secretary script, likely all by the same hand. Ink bleeding through the parchment. Item 1 is written in slightly larger and darker hand with opening words in bastard anglicana., and Written in England, probably in West Hanningfield between 1603 and 1611 (each document has a different date). On the first item, dorse: the number”59” in pencil. On item 2, dorse: “843” in pencil. Gift of Western Michigan University Department of History to WMU Special Collections in 1999.

An additional parchment sheet (135 x 260 mm) is attached by the tag behind the plica., Front of a folded indenture chirograph document (conveyance) of Penelope Warde of Great Dunmow, Essex, widow to Richard Phillips, who was a wheelwright, for ₤10 15s + ₤8 to be paid to her 10s each quarter day with grants of parcels of land in Great Dunmow towards Chelmsford., A 6-line inscription on the dorse in a contemporary hand similar to the main text, “Sealed and... in the presence of...” three signatures follow (illegible except for two “Johns”)., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 1 December 1659 in document. Signed, “The mark of Penelope Warde” beside the slits for the parchment tag on the plica. Gift of Western Michigan University Department of History to WMU Special Collections in 1999.

Containing 66 acres. Name of John Richardson mentioned. Two red-wax, impressed seals (design not visible), each stamped on tags., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 25 August 2 James II. At middle center in the near-contemporary hand, “15/18 [?] | Mr and Mrs Raymond | to | Mrs Collard} Release” and three illgible words in a near contemporary hand followed by “1686.” Also at the middle center of dorse in a later hand: “9.” Gift of the Western Michigan University Department of History to Special Collections in 1999.

Signed and delievered in the presence of the clerk Nicholas Wright, Thomas Lake, and John Windfrey. The Probate, dated 1634, in Latin, attached as an additional sheet and signed by notary Williams Whetston., Written in a light English secretary script. The additional sheet written in a hurried secretary script in darker ink.
