- Members of the Ruhleben Horticultural Society took their competition seriously in March 1918. The table in an exhibition hall in Ruhleben displays a wide range of fauna grown in the camp and presented to the camp population at Easter.

- Prisoners of war are busy washing their laundry outdoors on the Hauptstrasse (Main Street) of the prison camp at Goettingen. This "street" was the main thoroughfare in the camp and was bordered by the barracks. A garden is in the foreground of the photograph which included both flowers and vegetables. These crops helped to diversify the prisoners' diets during the summer.

- A British officer sits in his room at Werl, posing for a portrait. His room is well decorated, especially in comparison to facilities available to enlisted men in prison. He is seated at a table, which is covered with a table cloth and a book. The officer has a number of pictures in frames on the table and on the wall, as well as some newspaper clippings.

- Four French Muslim prisoners pose for a photograph outside of their barrack at the prison camp at Zossen-Wuensdorf. Note the decorative garden behind the men along the outside wall of the building.

- German soldiers and prisoners stand on a street in the prison compound in Stralkowo. Wooden barracks line the street and tall utility poles stand in the middle of the thoroughfare. These barracks served as the quarters for the 2nd Reserves of the Landsturm, German troops that were assigned to provide security for the camp. Note the flower gardens which are carefully tended in front of each barrack. These gardens provided prisoners with some pastime to decorate the outside of their accommodations.

- British civilian internees participated in competitions to improve the appearance of the camp by cultivating gardens. This garden is outside of Barrack 5 at the prison camp at Ruhleben.

- This photograph shows the camp fence with several German sentry posts and the side of a two-story brick building at Muenster. A bicycle stands in the doorway of the building and there are window boxes full of flowers to adorn the building. Many war prisoners engaged in gardening to pass the time. Unlike many prison camps that were constructed from scratch, Muenster utilized existing buildings to accommodate POW's and administrative offices.

- A group of sick and wounded French colonial soldiers stand in the hospital garden at Giessen under the care of French orderlies. They are recuperating in the fresh outdoor air.

- Polish prisoners stroll around the garden in the prison courtyard at Marmosa-Sziget. By growing their own food, POW's could enjoy a diversion and obtain some diversity in their diets. This photograph provides a good view of the exterior of the facility.

- A group of Russian prisoners of war work in their gardens at an unidentified Austrian prison camp. Gardening allowed POW's to spend some time outdoors, improve the appearance of the camp, and, most importantly, helped vary their diet. The prisoners could augment their rations with fresh vegetables. In many camps, prisoners held garden competitions to test their horticultural skills.
