- Description:
- Three ledgers from the grocery business operations of Martin A. Sweet, Mason, Michigan. Martin A. Sweet was born in about 1826 in Pennsylvania. His first wife Margarette died in 1855. They had a son Perry that year. He was married again to Lydia A. Williams in 1865, and they had two daughters, Nettie and Allie. Lydia was a dressmaker. Martin started his business with only $35 but at the end of his active days was quite successful. He built the Pioneer Block building in downtown Mason, where his "Pioneer Grocery" was located. He died on February 21, 1881, and is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Mason. The first ledger in this collection is a "day book" for May 31, 1873 to May 25, 1874, in which Martin Sweet recorded entries with date, customer name, items purchased, prices and total, and a unique number for each transaction in the left margin. These numbers may have referred to an index of customers that is not present. This day book has been disbound and may be missing pages. Second is a receipt book from 1877 which has the name Nellie Sweet written in the front end papers. Sweet had a daughter who is listed as Nettie or Nellie in different sources, as well as another daughter named Allie. This bound volume includes an index of customers with page number references at front, and records of their purchases by date, with prices and totals. Finally, a volume of pasted-in receipts from suppliers in Jackson, Detroit, and Lansing is included, which dates from 1875 to 1877 in reverse order. This volume's binding is in poor condition. Many receipts have elaborate vignettes and typefaces. Also in the collection are two small adhesive-backed labels from the M. A. Sweet store which reads "Dealer in Groceries, Provisions, Flour, Feed, Canned Goods, Oysters, &c."

- Description:
- This blank ledger book consists of pasted-in prescription slips usually with the C. J. Rouser Capital Drug Store pharmacy logo at top, completed by area doctors (sometimes not signed, or just an initial). They have Bates numbering stamps or transcribed Bates numbers on them but most are not dated. The earliest dates seen on some are July 1906, and the latest September 1906. The pharmacy was located at 123 South Washington Avenue in downtown Lansing, Michigan, during the era of this ledger. Over the years they had other locations in the city, and were in business for well over a century. Due to the fragility of the ledger, it has not been digitized. Contact the library for more information.

- Description:
- A collection of papers from the Lawrence family, who lived in Lansing for many years around the turn of the century, mostly in the 700 block of West Shiawassee Street. The collection contains three boxes of glass plate negatives taken by siblings Albert E. (A.E.L.) and Harriet (Hattie) Lawrence. These glass plate negatives have been separated out into Series 1 (2015-10-005.001) and each individual photograph is cataloged. The remainder of the collection is represented by the container list only, and those items can be seen on request in the library. Other siblings were William W., Ella H., and Frank H. Lawrence. Their father Henry North Lawrence also had a sister named Harriet, for whom his daughter may have been named. Brothers William and Frank kept several ledgers. Frank's seem to be more of an educational practice in record keeping, while William's served as both daily financial accounting and a diary of his thoughts or notes on happenings. The accounting and diary entries are often mixed together on the same page. There are also many theatre programs from all of the early 20th-century theatres around Lansing, most likely collected by William W. Lawrence. Henry North Lawrence was involved in the printing and insurance businesses. In this collection are a number of his business and accounting ledgers, as well as files of documentation from the businesses, especially the Wolverine and Peninsular Mutual Fire Insurance companies for which he served as secretary to the board. He was also the Deputy Commissioner of Insurance for the State of Michigan for some years in the late 19th century. There are several cabinet cards, prints of Albert and Hattie's photographs and from Lansing photography studios, not always identified. The collection also includes calling cards representing a number of important early Lansing families, a catalog of the phonograph records Hattie Lawrence owned, a booklet from the First Presbyterian Church dedicated to the memory of Henry North Lawrence, and a rolled broadsheet printing of "Pioneer Recollections" by James H. Lawrence concerning his move to Branch County, Michigan, in 1835. These materials were originally collected by David Caterino, a library volunteer and local history enthusiast.
