- Michigan State University Distinguished Professor Dr. Richard E. Lenski talks about his appointment to two different departments at MSU, his childhood in Ann Arbor and Chapel Hill, attending Oberlin College as a biology major, and studying the interplay of evolution and ecology in graduate school at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He also describes his career before coming to MSU and says that he finds the MSU community to be incredibly supportive and East Lansing to be a wonderful place to live. He ends by describing some of the awards he has received and discusses his concerns for the future of science and research. Lenski is interviewed by former MSU Professor Pauline Adams for the Michigan State University Faculty Emeriti Association Oral History Project.

- Keith Groty, former director of the Michigan State University School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR), talks about his family, education and his career as a professor, labor mediator, arbitrator, and negotiator and finally becoming MSU's Assistant Vice President of Personnel and Employee Relations. Groty also talks about attempts to create a faculty union at MSU and the history of the MSU Faculty Grievance Office which he says was an attempt by the MSU to stop another push by faculty for unionization. Groty is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor emeritus of Labor and Industrial Relations, via telephone.

- In an oral history interview, Gladys Beckwith, professor emerita of American Thought and Language at Michigan State University, talks about earning her doctorate from MSU, staying on to teach and and later becoming interested in faculty governance issues and faculty unionization as she began to see that professors had little involvement in the decisions which affected them and the great disparity in faculty compensation between departments and gender. Beckwith also talks about suing MSU for sex discrimination, unsuccessful attempts by faculty to unionize, and colleges around the country using more and more part time faculty, which calls a national disgrace. Beckwith is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations and current Faculty Grievance Officer.

- Michael Rubner, Michigan State University's longest serving Faculty Grievance Official, talks about being born in Palestine and emigrating to the U.S., his education and what brought him to James Madison College at MSU in 1970. He also talks about why the FGO position interested him and his role in the creation of a grievance manual. Rubner says that he inherited an office which did not run smoothly and discusses the steps he took to improve things and that he decided to leave the position because of two faculty members who "made his life miserable". Rubner is interviewed by MSU Professor John Revitte, who himself is a former FGO. Revitte also reflects upon some of his experiences in the office and his revisions to the grievance manual.

- Robert Repas, professor emeritus of the Michigan State University School of Labor and Industrial Relations, discusses labor education in Michigan and in particular, his own experiences from 1950 through 1960 working at the UAW's FDR-CIO Summer Camp in Port Huron. He says that the UAW camp's main purpose was to build skills and to train workers to help bring change in society and increase employment benefits. Repas says that the establishment of worker education programs in Michigan was led by MSU President John Hannah who was motivated by a desire to "one up" the University of Michigan and curry favor with the labor unions who had significant influence in Lansing. He describes the early days of the Labor and Industrial Relations Center at MSU, the people who ran it, and programs it conducted around the state. He also explains his perspective on how labor schools should function and the relationship they should have with unions and businesses. Repas is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations.

- Dr. William Derman, Michigan State University Professor of Anthropology, talks about his career-long effort to combine intellectual engagement with political activism and social change. Derman is interviewed by Dr. David Wiley, Director of the MSU African Studies Center and Peter Limb, MSU Libraries Area Studies Librarian. Derman recalls his time at the University of Michigan, joining Students for a Democratic Society, teaching African American students in Detroit, his anti-war efforts, and his work as an anti-Apartheid activist. He also talks about his work in South Africa with land use planning, water rights, and education and later shifting his focus to Zimbabwe to assist development and resettlement projects. Derman questions the ability of younger faculty and students to be engaged both as academics and citizens. He sees a low level of activism in the current faculty and student body and is not sure how the community will respond to current and future challenges. - In the second of two interviews, Donna Zischke, former Michigan State University director of Academic Human Resources, reflects on her MSU career which began in the 1970s and her evolving responsibilities regarding the Faculty Grievance Policy (FGP) and Faculty Grievance Official (FGO). Zischke talks about her interactions with the MSU Board of Trustees, former MSU administrators and FGOs she worked with, the impact which successive MSU presidents had on the evolution of the FGP, the differences between FGP grievances and standard employment law and how MSU faculty unionization attempts influenced the development of the FGP and FGO's office. Zischke is interviewed by Robert Banks, former MSU associate provost and associate vice president for Academic Human Resources and John Revitte, MSU professor emeritus in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. - Weil remembers his medical school training during WWII, his first position, and coming to MSU in 1968 for the challenge of creating the new Department of Pediatrics. He also discusses hiring faculty, sharing laboratory space with other colleges, the shift from a two-year to a four-year program, professional organizations, political advocacy for children’s health issues, various national efforts that elevated the profile of MSU, and the Department’s relationship with local hospitals and local physicians. Repas talks about the school's directors, faculty, MSU President John Hannah's attempt to win favor with organized labor, the founding of the SLIR program in the mid 1950s, and SLIR being investigated by the Michigan State Legislature for being too union friendly and encouraging labor strife. He also shares stories about fellow faculty in SLIR and other MSU personalities, working with the MSU Board of Trustees, and a conflict he had with the UAW concerning his academic freedom. - Ed Welch, professor emeritus of the Michigan State University School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR) talks about his law career and his first contact with MSU in 1970 when the Muskegon law firm he worked for conducted labor and employment law seminars as part of SLIR's Labor Education Program (LEP). Welch says that he practiced labor law for many years, agreed to join SLIR on a part-time basis and specialize in workers compensation issues and finally came on board as a full time faculty member in 1999. He talks about the curriculum he taught, the Workers Comp Center and the Safety Center at MSU, being required to do enough outreach to cover his salary and expenses, his work and travel demands, the newsletter he published, the interpersonal and professional dynamics in SLIR, becoming director of the Human Resources Education and Training Center (HRETC) within SLIR, the tensions between the academic program faculty and the extension service faculty, and the effectiveness and legacy of SLIR and what he liked about his association with it. Welch is interviewed by John Revitte, professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University.
