The address is associated with a saloon, tobacco, and cigars establishment owned by Charles C. Jennings, according to the Directory of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County in 1883. One man stands on a wooden sidewalk with a cobblestone curb and gravel or dirt street in front of the store. A small portion of the Academy of Music, an opera house, is visible to the right of the Senate.
