- Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to G.W. Hallam on June 1, 1861. The document bears the signatures of President Benjamin Vernor, and Secretary Henry Starkey, beside a yellow embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Illustrations of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The certificate is mounted on linen.

Roberts, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, beside a green embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Hand-colored illustrations of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. Stars have been added around the top edge of the central circle motif. The certificate has been mounted on linen.

- Black and white photographic print of an older photographic print with the caption "First Hose Reel in Detroit" added at its bottom. A horse drawn hose apparatus carrying five firefighters is stopped in the street in front of a firehouse decorated with stone reliefs of crossed ladders and bugles. The number 1 is visible on the lanterns of the apparatus. A crowd of men in hats and coats stands along the wooden sidewalk. "KZ66" printed in white in lower right corner of grey inner border. "Hose reel 1860 w. Lafayette Steam Engine #1" handwritten on verso.

"Return to Oliver Bourke, 32 Madison Avenue, Detroit," is printed on the front page of the book. Bourke is listed as a trustee of the fire department on that page.
