- French and British prisoners are engaged in a "cootie hut" outside of their barracks and next to the laundry at Muenster. The POW's had to regularly take their bedding outside for airing to get rid of lice and other vermin. In this camp, prisoners took their wooden bunks outside as well for cleaning. Some prisoners pass the time by playing board games while others simply sit around talking. German authorities were constantly vigilant to prevent the outbreak of epidemics in the densely crowded barracks of enlisted men.

- British and French prisoners of war draw their daily bread rations from a cart under the watchful eyes of German Landsturm guards. The British troops, used to white bread, considered the German "Kriegsbrot" to be a poor substitution, especially as the war continued and substitute ingredients were added to replace flour supplies.

- Russian and French prisoners pull a wagon full of correspondence and parcels from the train station to the prison camp at Merseberg. Horses were in short supply in Germany after the war started, while POW labor was plentiful. Prisoners took over the job of pulling wagons whenever possible.

German enthusiasm for detecting banned items sometimes spoiled food preservation by opening cans and tins or cutting through bread and meat products.

- A military funeral possession marches to the cemetery outside the prison camp at Ohrdruf. The dead inmate is a French soldier and his comrades serve as pall-bearers in the funeral. The casket is followed by a German officer and chaplains as well as some of the deceased's comrades.

- French and Russian prisoners relax outside their barrack in Koenigsbrueck one afternoon. The men are spending their time reading, playing cards, or engrossed in a chess game under the supervision of two German guards.

- French and Russian prisoners work on shoes and boots in the cobbler shop at Merseberg. The men are busy making new shops and boots or repairing worn out footwear. These skilled laborers provided an important service in the prison camps and unskilled prisoners gained the opportunity to learn a new trade during their captivity. German guards stand in the back of the shop.

- A view of the kitchen in Minden II, with the German non-commissioned officer supervisors in the foreground and the French POW kitchen staff in the rear. The day's menu (21 July 1915) is written on a chalk board. Breakfast consisted of coffee; lunch featured beef and potato soup; and dinner offered herring and potatoes.

- The camp commandant inspects the daily production of bread in the prison bakery at Quedlinburg. German officers record the production numbers and French bakers remove the freshly-baked loaves. Bread was an important part of the prisoners' diet and each prison had to produce vast amounts of bread on a daily basis.
