- Description:
- This scrapbook, created by Linda Maria Stober, documents the history of Stober's Bar, particularly during the years it was owned and operated by members of the Stober family. It consists of a combination of photographs, newspaper clippings, printed text, and some ephemeral materials. The building at 812 East Michigan Avenue in Lansing, Michigan, was built in the early 1920s, and at first housed a succession of grocery and hardware stores. In 1935, Jacob and Katrina Schneider purchased it and operated it as a tavern known as The German Village. During World War II its name was changed to The Rustic Village. In 1958 the bar was purchased by Helmut Frank, and in 1963 it was sold to Rudy and Heidi Stober. At that time it became known as Rudy's Rustic Village, and sometime in the 1970s the name was changed to Stober's Bar. The bar was known for its shuffleboard tables and ornate interior decor, as well as murals outside painted by the Stobers' son-in-law Greg Humbert. Rudy Stober sponsored several sports teams including softball, and was added to the Michigan Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1985. The bar often featured live entertainment, and operated as a disco for several years in the 1970s. Although the Stober's name has stayed with the business, the bar was sold again in 2006. Due to the nature of this scrapbook's construction, select items have been digitized. To view the scrapbook in its entirety, contact the library.
