The recto is printed with the text: Madam: You are respectfully invited to attend the opening of Spring Millinery on Thursday, March 24, 1870. Most respectfully yours, Hugo Hill, 181 Jefferson Avenue Handwritten notes on the recto list the names and addresses of Wilkins and Stone of Chicago, Captain James Wilkins of Pittsburgh, D. Wilkins of Chicago, Alvan Wilkins of Detroit, and D. Beecher of Detroit.

Shops seen in the 200 block of South Washington Avenue: part of Muir Drugs at 229, Cotton Shop women's clothing at 231, Juvenile Shop at 233, Clark's Jewelry at 235, and La Mode millinery at 237. South of East Washtenaw Street is seen Shaw's Jewelers at 301 South Washington Avenue. The north side of East Washtenaw is also seen in the background: Ellison Book Shop at 101, Pacific Finance Loans at 107, American Laundry at 111 and Hal Clark tailor at 121 East Washtenaw Street. City Planning Division staff annotated the photo incorrectly (it is actually East Washtenaw below the writing, "West Washtenaw"). The photo was also trimmed for display.
