- Jon Frey, Michigan State University professor of Art and Art History and author of "Spolia in fortifications and the common builder in late antiquity", talks about the reuse of building materials in late Roman and Byzantine buildings and into the Medieval period, especially those elements with Latin or Greek inscriptions. Frey talks about literacy rates during those periods and asks if the elements were actually meant to be read or if it was sufficient to the builder that they be recognized simply as ancient writing. Frey is introduced by the Head of the Fine Arts Library, Terrie Wilson.

- Professor Susan Selke delivers a talk titled, "Rethinking the Packaging of the Products You Buy - Is There Hope to Reduce Waste?" Selke talks about the Packaging school at Michigan State University, the utility of packages, minimizing packaging materials, and recycling. She explains the communication function labeling performs, how packaging has changed, and how other countries monetize the costs of waste in the cost of the packaging. Sleke also describes the value of recycling as a cost reduction method when there is a use for the material. - This collection consists of approximately 320 photographs from Lansing Civilian Defense preparedness activities, circa 1942 to 1944. Subjects include training and preparation for air raids, bombing, and blackouts; fundraising and recycling; Red Cross and medical preparation; communications including homing pigeons; public safety, police, and fire; vocational education; the draft; parades; and other related activities. The Civilian Defense Control Center was located in the old City Hall on the northeast corner of Capitol and Ottawa avenues.
