Description:
Mounted black and white photograph of Hazen S. Pingree posed while turning the first shovel at first grading of Grand Boulevard on August 10, 1891. Men surround Pingree to his right and behind him, while a wagon and a horse can be seen to his left. Pingree is looking directly at the camera with a shovel full of dirt and rock in his hands. He is wearing a suit, hat, and has a mustache and goatee.

2462. Mounted sepia-toned group portrait photograph of seven uniformed firefighters

Description:
Mounted sepia-toned group portrait photograph of seven uniformed firefighters. The original accession record identified two of the men standing in the top row--although it is unclear as two which exactly--as James Shea, and Timothy Callahan, and listed Richard Filbin and John O'Neil as being among the three men seated in the front. The man at the top right wears a helmet and belt identifying him as a member of Continental Company No. 8. He rests his hand on the shoulder of the men seated in front of him who wears a kepi hat and a belt also with the number "8." The two men standing in the center wear matching uniforms including firefighter belts identifying them as belong to one of the rescue companies. The both rest their hands on the shoulder of the man seated below them in the center, who wears a kepi hat, and a firefighter belt, the writing on which, "Stee[...]," is rendered partially illegible by glare. The man on the top right wears a helmet and firefighter belt which identifies him as a member of Neptune Company No. 2. A man with a kepi hat, and a rescue company belt sits in the lower right. Two helmets from Ladder Company No. 1 are positioned on the ground between the seated subjects. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock.

Black and white photo taken at the opening of a line of the Detroit Citizens Street Railway Company. Four streetcars are draped in banners and flags and stopped along the sidewalk. Piles of bricks and construction debris are along the block on the left. Several bicycle stores are across the street on the right, and a moonlight tower stands in the background on the left. "Detroit Citizens St. Ry. Opening of Line," is stamped on the verso.

Description:
Photograph. Sepia-toned gelatin silver photo of a parade float that was part of the Detroit Bi-Centenary Parade. The float consists of a floral-decorated, horse drawn wagon that shows a large swan and a gondola. A gondolier is standing at the gondola stern, a woman is seated in the middle, and another woman is standing at the bow of the gondola. One girl is seated at the front of the float and another girl is seated at the rear. Three African-American men are standing by the horses. A floral sign on the side of the float notes "Breitmeyer," which was most likely John Breitmeyer Sons florists (as listed in the 1901 Detroit City Directory). The parade is moving along a residential street with several spectators, houses, and an apartment building (or hotel) being visible in the background, but the street name is not known. The apartment building (or hotel) has the sign, "The Imperial," over the doorway, but there is no listing for this name in the 1901 or 1902 Detroit City Directories.

Photograph. Sepia-toned gelatin silver photo of a parade float that was part of the Detroit Bi-Centenary Parade. The float is mounted on streetcar truck and decorated with a rowboat that is carrying Cadillac, a priest, and three of his crew as they approach the shore. Two men, dressed as Indians, are standing at the shoreline. A sign at the right end of the float notes "Landing of Cadillac 1701." The parade is moving along a residential street and three wood-frame houses can be seen in the background, but the street name is not known. Several spectators can also be seen in the background. Handwriting on the verso notes "Landing of Cadillac, 1701."

Sepia-toned photograph taken along the railroad tracks which run through a newly created gap through what was previously a single building at the Ford River Rouge Factory Complex. A kneeling worker inspects a switch along the tracks, while another works on the windows overlooking the left side of the gap from a ladder. "27033-6-23-19," is printed in the lower right corner of the recto. The photo is mounted on a linen backing.

Mounted sepia-toned photo showing nine firemen and the equipment of Engine Company No. 3 in front of the fire station on Clifford Street. The firemen are standing in front of a horse-drawn hose wagon and a horse-drawn steam fire engine. The brick fire station building with large wooden doors can be seen in the background. Decorative stone carvings that depict a fire department motif (crossed ladders and helmet) can be seen on either side of the fire station above the windows. The street name sign showing "Clifford St." can be seen just to the left of the crossed ladders motif. A wood frame building can be seen at the far right side of the photo along with three men who are standing near the rear end of the steam engine. Handwriting on the verso notes "Engine Co. #3 c.1871."
