Saying, "It's not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad-based growth," Obama details new programs but assures listeners there will be no increase to the deficit. He calls for changes to voting processes and an end to extraordinarily long waits to cast a ballot. Obama closes by invoking the memory of those affected by gun violence stirring the crowd by declaring that gun control proposals deserve consideration in Congress and the victims "deserve a vote."

- Twenty-three year-old Michigan State University graduate Ronald Gillum talks about growing up in East Lansing and Lansing, MI after moving from Detroit. Gillum says that his parents are both college educated professionals and that he always felt that he was expected to go to college and he explains why he chose a career in business and public administration over professional sports. Gillum believes that in ten years he will be married with a family, will be working in Michigan state government and perhaps will hold elective office. Gillum also describes the differences in the workload between high school and college, relates a humorous incident which happened while he lived in a coed dorm and comments on his professors and courses.

Dunbar explains the problems in refusing to recognize governments established by force and also expresses doubts about the United Nations' refusal to recognize countries which do not uphold the Declaration of Human Rights. Dunbar also says that the problem facing the establishment of democracy in South America is the rise of dictators who cater to a broad and strong worker group rather than to the elite class.

- Olga "Jo" Beltrame, with her husband Ed Beltrame, discusses her career as a union officer and organizer with the United Packinghouse Workers Organizing Committee and UPWOC Local 69. Beltrame talks about her childhood in Montreal, her father's union activity, coming to Detroit to find work at the age of 14, her experiences working at the Swift meat packing plant and what she later did to help organize meat packing plants, especially Swift's Detroit Hammond-Standish plant. The Beltrames both discuss unions and their shared union activities through the years, including their work in organizing meat packing plants across several states, the wage improvements and benefits which were won for workers, and their elected positions in the union. Ends abruptly. The Beltrames are interviewed by John Revitte, Michigan State University professor of Labor and Industrial Relations, and Joan Kelly, editor of the Michigan AFL-CIO newspaper. - Charles Killingsworth discusses the establishment of the Michigan State University Labor and Industrial Relations Center in 1956, which later became the School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR). Killingsworth, who came to MSU in 1947 to teach economics, says that he was asked by MSU President John Hannah to start and head the SLIR. He gives details on the school's beginnings, and explains why it was considered important by the university to provide an extension service to labor and business with accompanying research and scholarship. He also discusses faculty he hired through the years, the school's relationship with labor organizations, how the school expanded to offer graduate degrees and why he left the directorship to focus on teaching and arbitration, Ends abruptly. - Cookie talks about college and teaching in Mississippi, coming to Lansing in 1963 and 1964 to work summers in the factory and returning south to teach in the fall. In 1965, Cookie permanently hired into Fisher. He describes a workplace with few minorities and one black supervisor. Cookie comments on the 1970 UAW strike, discrimination and race. He recalls applying and being tested for supervision but was told he failed the test. In 1971 he felt he was forced onto supervision to help GM comply with new laws. Cookie recalls that some workers would not accept their paychecks from a black. He talks about cooking a roast in the paint ovens, area dinners, the salaried dining room and retirement.

- Dr. Leon Fink, Professor of Labor History at the University of Chicago, delivers a presentation entitled, Cooperation and cash: global seafarers and the ‘Race to the bottom’ in the Twenty-First Century, at the Michigan State University Museum. - Harold Fisher's grandfather started the first commercial fishing business in Grand Haven, located on Dewey Hill. In this interview, Harold discusses the family business, the family's involvement in the First Reformed Church, as well as childhood memories and his service days as a young man in the Air Force during World War II. For nearly twenty years, Harold worked for the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District as Vocational Director, Director of Special Projects, and Director of Personnel. He was a business consultant for Northern Michigan University for three years, and he worked for Grand Haven Public Schools as a math teacher and Coordinator of Business Education. Harold was also employed by the University of Michigan as an adjunct instructor of vocational education. He was elected to the Grand Haven City Council in 1959.
