In this installment of "The lawmakers" Dr. Willis Dunbar interviews state Senators Perry Greene and John Martin, both of Grand Rapids. The two senators discuss their success in helping to increase workman's disability benefits and old age assistance while lamenting the legislature's failure to create an adequate highway program. They also discuss pending legislation to fund Michigan State College and the University of Michigan, and a law which was recently passed to reform the grand jury system in Michigan.

10977. Interview of former Michigan State University President M. Peter McPherson on the Faculty Grievance Policy and Official

Description:
M. Peter McPherson, former president of Michigan State University, reflects on his time at MSU and particularly his involvement with the MSU Faculty Grievance Policy (FGP) and the Faculty Grievance Official (FGO). McPherson talks about the effectiveness of the FGP and its weaknesses and the rationale for some of the specific changes he brought to the FGP during his tenure as MSU President. He also describes one grievance in particular which required significant university resources to shepherd through the process and says that he was finally forced to intervene personally in order to bring resolution to the matter. McPherson is interviewed by Bob Banks, former Associate Vice President for Academic Human Resources and professor emeritus of the James Madison College at MSU, and John Revitte, former MSU professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations.

10979. Carla Gates discusses her career as a skilled trades electrician and UAW member at the Fisher Body plant in Lansing, MI

Description:
Carla recalls being hired in September 1976 and people yelling out the windows of the factory at those lined up to apply. She describes her first day being assigned to the Body Shop because she "looked strong." Carla went on supervision to stay on the day shift but returned to production. In 1985 she was accepted as an electrical apprentice. Carla discusses education, work, sexism issues, relations with male tradesmen, management, and her union activity.
