- Noted literary scholar and critic Robert Alter delivers the closing keynote address, entitled "Hebrew Poetry Rewriting Job", of the "Symposium on Modern Hebrew and Israeli Literature", sponsored by the Michigan State University Jewish Studies Program and the MSU Libraries. Alter says that the Hebrew Bible is the foundation for all subsequent Hebrew literature and offers an analysis of the poetry of Nathan Zach and Zelda Schneersohn Mishkovsky, known simply as "Zelda". Alter reads from Zach's poems and comments on syntax, rhythm, symbolism and metaphor and then moves to the poetry of Zelda and similarly comments on her use of biblical language. A question and answer session follows. The event is convened by MSU Librarian Deborah Margolis. Testimony is heard from Gina McCarthy, of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Snyder acknowledges failures by Michigan government says that the emergency financial manager system failed in Flint, but blames the EPA and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for covering up the crisis. McCarthy says that no one at the EPA did anything wrong and that they of the EPA staff involved did what they could to prevent and later solve the crisis. McCarthy also blames Flint's emergency manager for switching the water source and the State of Michigan for not requiring the use of corrosion control chemicals. Committee members challenge both McCarthy's and Snyder's testimony and several members call on both Snyder and McCarthy to resign.

- During the morning session on the nineteenth day of the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, members of the House Judiciary Committee serving as "managers", the equivalent of prosecutors, present their case for the introduction of witnesses into the trial. Managers Ed Bryant (R-TN), Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) and James E. Rogan (R-CA) explain their reasoning for introducing witnesses. Clinton attorney David Kendall responds to the managers, explaining why introducing witnesses to the trial is unnecessary. Managers Bill McCollum (R-FL) and Henry Hyde (R-IL) join Bryant, Hutchinson and Rogan for the rebuttal of Kendall. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) submits a proposal that the Senate debate and vote on the option to introduce witnesses in a closed session.

Her father was a clam fisherman on the Grand River and sold the clam shells to the button factory in Lamont. He also worked in local factories, grew fruit, and had a dairy business. Dorothy talks in detail about how blueberry and evergreen farming started in the area. Beginning in the 1950s, the family owned and operated a Christmas tree business which shipped trees throughout the United States.

Grace discusses the history of the shootings at Kent State University and explains the social movement that arose at the university during the late 1960's and early 1970's. He talks about the protests in opposition to the Vietnam War that occurred at Kent State in 1970, the shots fired by Ohio National Guard troops and the economic climate in the U.S. which he says helped to fuel an "anti-war mentality" among college students during that time. Grace answers questions from the audience. He is introduced by Thomas Dietz, professor of Sociology and Environmental Science and Policy at Michigan State University. - Dr. Deborah Wagenaar DO, MS, professor in the Michigan State University Department of Psychiatry, talks about her career at MSU, specializing in geriatric psychiatry, and working with older adults and their multiple medical problems. Wagenaar says she was born and raised in Southeast Michigan and did her undergrad at Wayne State University. She describes the work environment in the College as "feeling like home." Wagenaar says she was initially reluctant to pursue psychiatry but it grew on her over time. She says she has a goal of inspiring students to pursue geriatric psychiatry as a specialty and recommends exposing students to older patients early in their education. Wagenaar talks about the current state of psychiatric education and how the neurosciences are likely to change the field. She talks about some of the advances in the field for treating depression, dementia, and other maladies.

Vassen discusses growing up in South Africa during the late 1940's and 1950's as an Indian and living in the Indian community of Fordsburg, near Johannesburg. Vassen says he was active in the Transvaal Indian Youth Congress and in 1962, joined the illegal military wing of the African National Congress (ANC). Forced into exile in London in 1964, Vassen says he continued to be an active member of the ANC and edited "Letters From Robben Island: a selection of Ahmed Kathrada's prison correspondence, 1964-1989."
