Myers discusses his youth and early jobs before coming to REO, and describes how officers from the Detroit Arsenal would come to the plant to talk about military vehicle specifications during the war years. Meyers also talks about how he was recruited, with other REO employees to go to the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA), Lansing's transit system, as REO declined. He comments on legendary REO manger Clare Loudenslager’s style at REO and later at CATA and says that REO was a great place to work. The interviewer is Shirley Bradley. Several argue that the stereotypical definition of the American Character presents the view of one dominate group and largely ignores the view point of other races. - Michigan State University Professor of Music Harlan Jennings delivers a talk entitled, "Nebraska Memories: Opera and Willa Cather." Jennings describes how Nebraska's Platte River Valley served as the Midwest's first interstate highway, attracting not only pioneers but some of the nineteenth century's greatest singers. He explains the draw of opera in the late nineteen and early twentieth centuries calling the performers the "rock stars" of their era. Jennings talks about the chronicler of plains life novelist Willa Cather, who as an undergraduate English major at the University of Nebraska, wrote critiques of those renowned performers for local newspapers. Jennings profiles various performers and reads excerpts from Cather's critiques. A question and answer session follows. MSU Music Librarian Mary Black Junttonen introduces Jennings. - In a program entitled "Your governor'" Michigan Governor G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams argues for an appropriation from the state's General Fund and a tax on corporations to fund road building and maintenance across the state. Williams laments the terrible condition of Michigan roads and says that a proposed gas tax hike would be too little too late and another terrible burden for the average consumer to bear. The governor instead proposes borrowing from the General Fund to finance the Highway Department's building fund and supplementing those dollars with a tax on corporations.

- In his inaugural address, newly elected Governor G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams calls for bipartisan cooperation to further the best interests of the people of Michigan. Williams lays out problems currently facing the state including, falling educational standards, inequality between the races, and the sorry condition of Michigan roads. These problems can he solved, he says, if the newly elected Michigan Legislature can set aside partisan politics and work with him to find solutions. Williams also says that it is the duty of the people to be the watchdog of their elected officials and that it is the duty of the media to keep the people informed.

- Ken Germanson, Allied Industrial Workers international union staff member, AIW newspaper editor, and president of the Wisconsin Labor History Society (WLHS), talks with Michigan State University Labor and Industrial Relations Professor Emeritus John Revitte via telephone. Germanson and Revitte talk about their long association, projects they have collaborated on, and their careers. Germanson compares the AIW with the United Auto Workers in terms of how they handled grievances and race relations, the makeup of AIW membership, its political leanings, and the history of the AIW as it navigated the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Gernamson describes steps to racially integrate the AIW, and explains how the union survived allegations of widespread corruption. Germanson says that the AIW was small and depended on the AFL and schools like MSU to educate members. Part 1 of 7.

- Jennifer Depres interviews Grand Haven photographer Harold Bretschneider. After high school, Harold worked at the Eagle Ottawa Leather Company in the late 1930s. Harold recalls the Depression, the Eagle Ottawa strike, and how his family lost their home. In 1943, he entered the service, receiving medical training to work in the psychiatric and contagious disease wards of the evacuation hospital in New Guinea. After the war, he met and married Bernice Bender in Grand Haven. In 1949, he opened the long-standing Bretschneider Photography Studio on Washington Avenue.

Repas talks about his earliest days as a labor advocate in Wisconsin, how SLIR was staffed and various people he worked with through the years, the Michigan Legislature's investigation into the school and its mission, his relationship with MSU President John Hannah, SLIR programs and seminars, the MSU Faculty Grievance Office, and his involvement in the drives to unionize MSU faculty. Repas says that he believes that his telephone was tapped through most of the 1960s because of his association with the ACLU and his run-ins with members of the John Birch Society. - Linguist Francesco Melfi from Cleveland State University, delivers a talk about the Delaware Indians, their relation with the Iroquois Confederacy, and his discoveries in the archives of Moravian documents housed at Michigan State University. Melfi concludes that assumptions about the Delaware being inferior to and dominated by the Iroquois are incorrect and that they maintained their autonomy and their traditions, along with a mythology more closely aligned with the Algonquin. He describes his accomplishments interpreting the Delaware language, translating Indian and missionary texts, comparing dialects, and suggests that a careful study of these documents will help "resurrect" Delaware culture. Melfi answers questions from the audience. The session is convened by Patrick McConeghy, Associate Dean of the MSU College of Arts and Letters.
