1102. Rev. Jim Jones speaks to members of the People's Temple before the mass suicide

Description:
Reverend Jim Jones speaks to the members of his Peoples' Temple congregation in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during their mass suicide. Jones persuades his followers that they are in imminent danger from the Guyana Defense Force and need to end their lives and the lives of their children to prevent being tortured and killed by the GDF. Christine Miller debates with Jones, arguing against the suicide and suggesting alternative courses of action. Others speak in support of the decision and try to calm the crowd. Jones tells them, For God's sake let's get on with it. We've had as much of this world as you're going to get... The recording becomes "Tape No. Q-042" in the FBI evidence file.

1103. Doug Sleep discusses his career at REO Motor Car Company and Diamond REO Trucks, Inc

Description:
Doug Sleep talks about his career in the export department at REO Motor Car Company/Diamond-Reo Trucks, Inc., in Lansing, MI, from 1961 to 1975. Sleep talks about preparing trucks to be shipped for sale overseas, about becoming a UAW steward and the deterioration of worker/management relations when the company changed ownership. Sleep describes the difficulty in running a shop with the chronic shortage of parts in the company's last days and final owner Francis Cappaert's attempts to break the union. He also laments the loss of the worker pension fund and the creation of federal pension guarantee program. The interviewer is Shirley Bradley. The first minute of the interview was not recorded. Recorded as part of the commemoration of the REO Motor Car Company’s 100th Anniversary.

Description:
President Barack Obama holds a press conference in the East Room of the White House. Obama focuses on his jobs plan and urges members of Congress to pass it, saying that "any senator who is thinking about voting against the bill needs to explain why they oppose something that would provide urgent help to the economy". He challenges the Republicans to roll out their own plan to stimulate the economy and says he remains willing to negotiate. Obama also responds to questions gun running, U.S. government loans to Solyndra, Chinese currency, U.S.- Pakistan relations, protests on Wall Street, and the European debt crisis.

1110. Staging the drama of deindustrialization

Description:
Fran Shor, emeritus professor of History at Wayne State University, delivers a talk entitled "Staging the drama of deindustrialization: Lynn Nottage's 'Sweat'." Shor discusses Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize winning play, "Sweat", specifically looking at the play as a reflection of the crisis caused by deindustrialization. Shor explains that his interest in the play is connected to his professional life as a labor scholar and that it is also connected to his personal life through his daughter, actress Miriam Shor, who appeared in an off-Broadway production of "Sweat". Shor explains deindustrialization and discusses how "Sweat" gives insight into the lives of the people who are most affected by deindustrialization. He answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck from the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
