U.S. President Donald Trump delivers remarks about the economy, border security, trade policy, and the news media. Trump predicts there will be a "red wave" in the coming election midterms and voices his support for Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), who is running for the House Speaker position that will be vacant upon Paul Ryan's (R-WS) retirement. He also endorses Republican Ohio state senator Troy Balderson, who is running for Ohio's 12th congressional district. Held in Columbus, Ohio.

1853. Aristides (Art) Arvanites owns Harry's Bar on Verlinden Street across from the Fisher Body plant in Lansing, MI

Description:
Art discusses his life and career as a Greek immigrant moving to Lansing and the history of the bar including its use as a UAW strike headquarters and soup kitchen. Art talks about the services the bar provided workers such as paycheck cashing, parking, fast lunches, and a friendly environment. He talks about being part of the Westside neighborhood and the Sexton High School students stopping by for lunch.

1854. Craig Johnson, an African American, discusses his career as a production worker and UAW member at the Fisher Body plant in Lansing, MI

Description:
Craig tells of being hired in March 1981 into Fisher where his father was a supervisor. He lists family members that work for GM, describes what it was like to work for his father, jobs he had, and some pranks pulled on him. Craig also talks about his union activity and being elected to the Recreation Committee.

1855. A panel discussion featuring Michigan State University faculty discussing publishing books on Native American history and culture

Description:
A campus authors panel, featuring Michigan State University faculty, discusses how their interests and areas of study in Native American history and culture became books. Susan Applegate Krouse describes writing and publishing her book, "North American Indians in the Great War" and Kimberli Lee discusses her book, "I do not apologize for the length of this letter" which grew from her dissertation on tribes of the plains. Lee recounts her experiences finding a publisher, revising the manuscript, and changing the notation style at the last minute. Heather Howard discusses her book "Keeping the campfires going" and comments on its origins, issues around getting it published and the implications of the cover art. Susan Lobo also talks about getting her first publishing contract and the perils associated with it and suggests that her book and the other books discussed by the panel compliment each other. The authors also respond to questions from the audience. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Michigan Writers Series.

President Obama pokes fun at himself, his Republican rivals, and the press corp during the White House Correspondents' Association Annual Dinner. Obama says Mitt Romney would probably consider the dinner's location, the Washington Hilton, a "fixer upper." White House Press Secretary Jay Carney is heard at the beginning calling for Obama's microphone to be turned off while the President is off-stage, all as part of a joke playing off a recent instance where the President unwittingly made comments in front of a live mic.

1858. More than a paycheck

Description:
Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, formally of the singing group "Sweet Honey in the Rock," delivers a talk entitled, "More Than A Paycheck: What Occupational Music Reveals About Worker Health." Barnwell explains how she came to a career that blended health and music and explains her research project which centers on using music to learn about worklife. Focusing on mining and textiles, Barnwell says that workplace issues and problems are often reflected in the lyrics of songs, as is unionization and attempts to improve the lives of workers. Barnwell answers questions from the audience. She is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series co-sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, the MSU Libraries Colloquia Series, and the MSU Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Held in the MSU Main Library.
