The focus of the event is the role community colleges play in developing America's workforce and furthering education. Biden explains how the uniquely American institution of the community college is positioned to provide education and training for the jobs of the 21st century and introduces President Barack Obama who talks about the necessity of education and his administration's education initiatives. Biden also introduces Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who describes the efforts of the Gates Foundation to support the non-traditional student, the primary client of the community college. Other speakers include Skills for America representative Penny Pritzker, and Arizona community college student Albert Ojeda.

He announces that James Baker, Secretary of State, will be going to Baghdad to visit Saddam Hussein in the hopes of achieving a peaceful solution on our terms. Tariq Aziz, Iraq's Foreign Minister, has been invited to Washington to talk with him.
