- Vice President Joseph Biden hosts the Medal of Valor ceremony with Attorney General Eric Holder at the White House. The Medal of Valor is the nation's highest honor awarded to public safety officers and is bestowed on 18 individuals who exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect others from harm. The list of honorees are: Officers Julie Olson, Reeshemah Taylor, Sean Haller, Rafael Rivera, Timothy McClintick, Max McDonald and Douglas Weaver; Wildlife Officer Michael Neel; Troopers Robert Lombardo and Joshua Miller (posthumously); Firefighters Peter Demontreux, Hope Scott and William Reynolds; Deputy Sheriff Krista McDonald; Deputies Cameron Justus (posthumously) and William Stiltner (posthumously); and Sergeants Karl Lounge Jr. and Thomass Baitinger (posthumously). Deputy Attorney General Mary Lou Leary convenes the ceremony and reads the official citations.

- Purdue University doctoral candidate Brandon Ward delivers a talk entitled, "Confronting the Chrome-plated Wasteland: The UAW, Working-Class Environmentalism and the Urban Crisis in Detroit." Ward describes the history of labor unions and environmentalists working together on a working-class environmentalism and how it served as a precursor to the urban environmental justice movement. Focusing on the Detroit region, Ward explains the common cause made between environmentalists and industrial union members and their families, UAW leadership championing preservation and beautification efforts, and governmental initiatives. He answers questions from the audience. Ward is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series co-sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and co-sponsored by the Lansing Stewardship Community / Motorcities - the Automobile National Heritage Area. - Michigan State University freshman Mari Nord talks about her Japanese and Norwegian heritage, her professor father and businesswoman mother, living in East Lansing, and her great love for traveling. Nord describes Japanese culture, the Japanese education system, and learning the language while in nursery school. She says that she feels torn between Japanese and American culture and gets along best at MSU with international students. She talks about adjusting to college life, majoring in veterinary medicine, and hoping to work with endangered species and says that she does not simply want to have a job and family if that means settling down in one place.

The school's director discusses the origins of the school, its educational programs and what veteran's pay to attend. Former student Edgar West discusses his training in the school's appliance repair program and how it prepared him for his his current job at the Sears Roebuck store in Lansing, MI. Dunbar also briefly interviews a number of current students who talk about their programs and where they are from.
