- Description:
- This paper critically reviews the current status of African communication educational resources and needs in the context of the development of the post colonial state and its institutions. In calling for an indigenized philosophy of communication, the paper argues that the current patterns of communication education are too foreign-oriented and have very little or no indigenous component. As a result, media practitioners are institutionally incapable of interpreting dynamically complex socio-economic and development problems facing Africa today.

- Description:
- The present study is an attempt to analyze how a British and an American newspaper covered Kenya's elections based on the premise that Britain and the U. S. have different national interests in their relationship with Kenya. The period covered is from the date the elections were announced to one month after the elections were held. There were 11 articles from the New York Times and 12 from the Guardian. Each of the papers had a reporter assigned to cover the elections in Kenya. Qualitatively, the study tries to examine the connotation of the words and phrases within the particular context they are used so as to identify recurring themes that could correspond to each of the country's perceived self-interest. The analysis is divided into two phases - the period before the elections and the period after the elections. The first was examined under two sub-themes: election fairness and stability. The specific areas that the study analyzed were sources of information, threat to stability and headlines. Findings show that the mass media have become important and powerful instruments in today's process of foreign policy formulation especially in the US and Great Britain which are driven by national self interest.

- Description:
- This paper focuses on work attitudes and life goals of youth in Zambia. More specifically the discussion deals with whether the youth have their own goals or accept societal ones, what they consider to be important means to success, and whether these are in line with societal prescriptions and norms, and their feelings about work and their general occupational preferences. The main concern was to ascertain whether there is inconsistency between culture and the social structure, ie between the cultural goals of material success and culturally approved means to achieve those goals.

- Description:
- South Africa, in a similar way to other developing countries, is experiencing rapid urbanisation, resulting in the growth of slums and squatter settlements where people live under appalling conditions of poverty and deprivation. People in these settlements live in substandard housing with inadequate water supply, sanitation and other basic necessities. Associated with this lack of services is an increase in disease and ill-health of these growing peri-urban populations. This paper draws attention to the relationship between poverty and health in the peri-urban environments. The discussion clearly indicates that the principal causes of ill-health and social maladjustment which include infections, inadequate nutrition, and faulty childrearing practices are products of poverty, ignorance and lack of resources. The effects of poverty on women and children's health is explored; and the new government's policy for dealing with poverty is highlighted.

- Description:
- Economic and political liberation in Africa has affected fragile national identities constructed over the past thirty or so years. This has led to the reconstruction of different identities and contestations affecting the legitimacy of government institutions in mediating conflict over the distribution of scarce resources. Using Tanzania as a case study, this article examines the relevance of multi-culturalism as a solution to the contest between sub-national identities mobilized by the current economic and political reforms.

- Description:
- This contribution seeks to explain the ruling ZANU (PF) party's electoral hegemony by outlining and analysing Zimbabwe's five general elections since 1979 and the two presidential elections since 1990. In this regard, the paper argues that the ruling party is experiencing a gradual decline in elite cohesion which is manifested in the electoral challenge of independent candidates coming from the ruling party itself. This phenomenon of independent candidates could have far-reaching consequences in overcoming the present state of weak political opposition in Zimbabwe. The paper therefore suggests a scenario in which a viable opposition could come from a splinter group inside the ruling ZANU (PF) itself not unlike the major ZAPU/ZANU split of 1963.
