Description:: The paper examines the problem of social exclusion in the provision of social security in Zimbabwe. After sketching a historical perspective of the problem of social exclusion in Zimbabwe, it is argued that social exclusion emanates largely from the orientation of social security which places emphasis on protecting persons employed in the formal sector. The reality in Zimbabwe, however, is that those employed in the formal sector constitute a small percentage of the population. Consequently, the majority are excluded from social security coverage. The paper also observes that there is a gender dimension to social exclusion as women are largely excluded from contributory social security schemes. The paper ends by calling for appropriate interventions in order to achieve inclusivenes in social security coverage.

Description:: According to recent global estimates, some 585,000 women die annually form pregnancy-related complications. Most of these deaths occur in the developing world. In Ghana, efforts to reduce the high maternal mortality rate (ranging from about 200 to 740 deaths per 100,000 live births) have given birth to the institutionalization of policies and programmes most of which derive their explanatory model form the medical perspective. However, the determinants of maternal mortality are a complex web of biology and culture. This paper presents the 'other side' of the story: a wider overview of the casual pathways by which simple interventions may produce the desired effect.
