- This article looks at mass communication research in the African cultural and traditional context and suggests some innovative approaches that would enhance local communication research endeavours. It examines how African peoples, cultures, institutions and communication environments impede or facilitate social research. The author calls for indigenous efforts in the construction of new theories and methodologies in communication research that would appropriately fit the African context of development.

- Description:
- This article surveys the relationship between the mass media and the government in Tanzania with respect to the implementation of the country's foreign policy. It argues that although there is a unanimous acknowledgement of mass media's role in the conduct of foreign affairs worldwide and even among Tanzania's leadership, a lingering suspicion of journalists persits among most government officials which makes them withhold vital information from the country's local mass media. It recommends, among other things, an open dialogue between the officials of the Foreign Ministry and the press in the effort to forge a working relationship that would facilitate wide debate in the conduct of foreign affairs and international issues as it is the case in a socialist democracy.

- Description:
- Economic issues are critical to social development in the African context. The authors examine four areas: economics as a central social development issue, employment creation with particular reference to income generating projects, appropriate technology, and regional economic inter-dependence. Current patterns in the creation of income generating projects are analysed in detail so as to illustrate the central thesis that economic development is an essential part of social development but is more likely to be effective if practiced from a clearly social development orientation rather than from an exclusively economic development framework. The building of human capacities and self-reliance at both community and national level are also emphasised. The authors conclude that, although development is not mere economic growth, nevertheless the knowledge and skills needed to facilitate economic development should be acquired by everyone involved in social development.

- This article emphasises that the uprooting and dislocation experienced by Mozambicans has effectively separated children from their own history and cultural traditions. This is a serious problem, as the psychosocial development of children is intimately connected to a sense of their own identity and family background. In previous times a living sense of history was passed down through a rich oral tradition, which was violently interrupted as a result of the war. However, various documentary projects developed in Mozambique and elsewhere have helped to re-engage dislocated children in cultural and community activities. The author suggests development of documentary projects and activities among refugee and displaced children and young persons that could include oral history, photographic projects, autobiography and video. These would help re-establish "collective memory" for children, help them to develop basic communication and learning skills and provide a source of historical and cultural information to the community generally.
