1041. French and Russian POWs at Sagan

Notes:
Various Russian nationalities and a French prisoner of war (soldier with the wounded arm) pose with a German non-commissioned officer (center, standing in the back row). This photograph shows the wide range of nationalities that fought in the Tsarist Army during the war from the polyglot Russian Empire.

1042. Nursery Garden at Ruhleben

Notes:
The Ruhleben Horticultural Society constructed a greehouse on the grounds of the prison camp at Ruhleben so its members could continue to cultivate a wide range of flowers during the winter months.

1043. Prison Compound at Freiburg in Winter

Notes:
Allied officers stand in the snow in the courtyard of the prison camp at Freiburg. The officers' camp was located in the old university building in the town and the prisoners had access to the quadrangle. As demonstrated by the heavy now on the branches of the trees, a snow storm just ended. The prisoners are carrying wood to heat their quarters.

1044. Surrender of the British at Kut-al-Amara

Notes:
Imaginary German view of the surrender of the British at Kut-al-Amara in April 1916. British General Charles Townshend offers his sword to the Turkish commander, with the British flag on the ground in submission. British and Indian troops have begun the process of stacking their weapons on the ground. The city of Kut can be seen in the background.

Seventeenth-century brown leather boards; raised bands on spine; spine compartments gold-stamped with acanthus leaf ornaments; gold-stamped black leather spine label, with title “S. Bern. Ser. C.D.” Bound in nine gatherings of 10 leaves each., Fore edge of a 14th century illuminated Latin manuscript from northern Italy, containing sermons written for monks of the Cistercian abbey of Locedio, near Gorizia in Friuli, by Ogier, Abbot of Locedio (and falsely attributed to another Cistercian, St. Bernard of Clairvaux)., and Illegible inscription by former owner (?) in Paris, on inside front cover. Jointly purchased by Western Michigan University and the Newberry Library in 2006.

1050. Conveyance, 1635, of Lands to Thomas Jackson, folded, front

Notes:
Document was folded five times and severaly worn with several holes along folds., Ball-shaped “pendant” seal, attached, and made of red wax, on parchment tag bearing the device of a winged heart., Front of a folded indenture document of Samuel Ladd of Chartham, Kent, England to Thomas Jackson of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral for ₤400 and messuage, including cottage, two gardens, two orchards, and three acres of land in Chartham. Ball-shaped, red wax seal, attached on a parchmat tag, and bearing the device of a winged heart., and Written in England and dated 8 April, 11 Charles I (1635). Four inscriptions on the dorse: two in an English secretary hand similar to the main text and two in a later crusive hand; the name of Elizabeth Ladd is mentioned along with the names Edward Nordey (sp?) and Godfrey Pyard (sp?). Formerly Phillipps no. 31801; the number “31801” located in center of dorse. Gift of the Department of History, Western Michigan University to WMU Special Collections in 1999.
