Notes:
Oral history interview with Jean Friedel and Margie Miner, conducted by Thomas Coyne on March 21, 1995. Friedel and Miner discuss how they came to teach at WMU, the status of women’s physical education programs, the development of women’s physical education programs, the organizational structure of women’s sports, discrimination in sports, and the role of Title IX in women’s athletics. Jean Friedel coached seven women’s sports, including basketball, field hockey, volleyball, gymnastics and track and field, at WMU during her 29-year tenure, which ran from 1960-1989. Margie J. Miner was a faculty member from 1957 until her retirement in 1986. She began the Women's Recreation Association at the university. She passed away on January 30, 2005 in Kalamazoo. and Tape summaries only. Full transcripts unavailable.

1103. Fortress at Navra in Estonia

Notes:
The medieval fortress at Narva, in Estonia, served as a repatriation center between Central Power prisoners of war leaving Russia and Russian POW's returning home. The YMCA established a relief station in the castle to provide physical relief to prisoners and their families as they passed through Estonia enroute their homes.

1105. Belgian Cobblers at Senne

Notes:
A group of Belgian cobblers pose outside their workshop with some of the tools of their trade on the table in this 1916 photograph. These men provided an important camp service in terms of repairing worn out shoes and producing new products. Unskilled POWs also gained the opportunity to learn a new trade that they could practice after their repatriation.

1106. British POWs at Work at Teltow

Notes:
A detachment of British prisoners of war dig a drainage ditch in a field outside the prison camp at Teltow. German Landsturm guards keep an eye on the workers. This area was susceptible to flooding and proper drainage was important to increase agricultural productivity.

1107. Barber Shop at Bautzen

Notes:
A group of barbers cut hair and shave prisoners in the barber shop in Bautzen. A French prisoner, to the left, is about to leave. Keeping hair short reduced the chance of lice and improved the general health standards of prison camps.

1108. Polish POWs Flying an Airplane in Bustyahaza

Notes:
Polish Legionnaires have some fun "flying an airplane" in the prison compound at Bustyahaza. They built the plane from a barrel, a plank, and some spare pieces of wood. Officers watch the prisoners have some fun.

1109. Italian POW Tied to a Stake at Mauthausen

Notes:
For the violation of camp rules, prisoners would be punished by being tied to the stake for several hours. Austrian authorities tied this Italian prisoner to the stake in the prison camp at Mauthausen.

Notes:
Election leaflet supporting Ernst Thälmann (KPD) for the March 13, 1932 Reichspresident election. The front calls out to women through figures and drawings to recognize the discrepancy between state aid to working class families and affluent families under the leadership of Paul von Hindenburg. The back accuses Hindenburg of being the candidate of war and emergency decrees. It concludes urging voters to support the KPD, which promises peace, freedom, and bread.
