2011. Russian POWs Stack Bales of Straw

Notes:
Russian prisoners on a labor detachment build a huge pile of hay for winter fodder. Both the Germans and Allies relied on horses for transportation and cavalry warfare. In the insert is a photograph of a "typical" Russian prisoner.

2012. German Commission Interviewing Russian POWs at Puchheim

Notes:
Professor H. Jakobsohn, from the University of Marburg, interviews Russian prisoners at Puchheim regarding their condition in the prison camp. Professor Jakobsohn led the Deutsche Kommission which examined medical and labor conditions in POW camps in Germany.

2013. Convalescent POWs on a Walk at Grafenwoehr

Notes:
French and Russian prisoners enjoy a walk with a German non-commissioned officer and a Landsturm guard during their recuperation from wounds or illnesses. These POW's work as assistants in the hospital post office and canteen.

2014. POW Facility at Struga

Notes:
The Bulgarian Army held captured Serbian prisoners in the tower at the end of the main street in Struga during the invasion of Serbia in October 1915. The Serbian Army was pinned down by an Austro-German offensive and the Bulgarians helped overwhelm the Serbian defenders.

2015. Ten Heller Script Bank Note from Katzenau

Notes:
Prisoners in Katzenau received these low denomination prison bank notes (10-Heller) in payment for their work. This money could only be used to make payments inside of the prison compound, which limited their value in terms of potential bribery of guards or to bank roll escape attempts.

2016. A Game of Checkers in an Austro-Hungarian Prison Camp

Notes:
An American and a French POW play a game of checkers, while another prisoner drinks tea and a French prisoner writes a letter. Arab, French, and British prisoners watch the competition as spectators. The wide range of nationalities in the photograph depicts the world war the Central Powers faced in Europe.

Notes:
Contemporary brown leather boards; two concentric double blind-ruled borders, filled with blind-stamped shell and flower ornaments; diapered center panel, lozenges of which contain blind-stamped flower and eagle ornaments; brass and leather strap-and-pin fastener; front and back pastedowns are vellum leaves; engraving of a saint’s deathbed scene removed from another text, and affixed to front pastedown. In a green cloth clamshell box, with green leather spine., Text in black ink, 18 lines per page with headings, superscript corrections and underlining in red; 2 line inital initial in text on f. 8v, and 3 line initial in margin on 9r with single line intials alternating red and blue in text. On f. 8v, a catchword in brown and circled in red., Manual or office book compiled for the Dominican nunnery containing liturgies and prayers open to ff. 8v-9r. Parchment stay between the gatherings., Gothic liturgical book hand, and Jointly purchased by Western Michigan University and the Newberry Library in 1996.

2019. Iconography of fifty hand colored full-figure drawings of male and female members of religious orders in their habits, spine

Notes:
Contemporary gilt-ruled calf, worn and repaired with spine gilt on all edges., Spine with gilt decoration of an iconography of the Roman Catholic Church presenting the traditional garbs of eight ecclesiastic posts and thirty-three monastic orders (ten with both female and male members)., and Based on evidence in the text, the iconography includes a monk from Tongerlo Abby near Antwerp, another from Ansewyck near Mechelen, which suggests Beligium as the place of composition. An earlier owner, Cornelia Alstede of Amsterdam, signed her name and address (in Dutch) on the verso of the front free flyleaf and indexed the whole (in French) on the recto and verso of the first leaf. A later owner identififed a handful of the images in blue ink on the black versos. Purchased by Western Michigan University Special Collections from Bruce McKittrick Rare Books, Inc.
