Notes:
Liturgy O.C.S.O. was published by Gethsemani Abbey, Trappist, KY and edited by Father Chrysogonus Waddell from 1966-1999. The journal (at that time a newsletter) began after September 1965 meeting of the Liturgy Commission of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance to report progress in liturgical renewal after Vatican II. The audience and contributors later included secular scholars of the Cistercian liturgy. and Editor's page / Fr. Notes:
This colorful wooden Russian soldier raises his hands in surrender; it was built by workers in Vilna in Lithuania, a region of the Russian Empire recently occupied by the German Army.

2136. Fire Drill at Traunstein

Notes:
The outbreak of fire in a crowded barrack was always a serious concern for German authorities. As a result, prisoners practiced fire escape drills on a regular basis. At Traunstein, civilian internees could escape from the third floor of their barrack by means of a canvas chute or by ladders while the camp fire brigade would combat the blaze. German officers supervise the exercise.

2137. View of the Prison Camp at Wittenberg

Notes:
This drawing shows the layout of the prison camp at Wittenberg and highlights some of the deficiencies of the facility, which contributed to the horrors of the typhus epidemic. Many of the stoves in the camp lacked fuel, prisoners had to wash outdoors in water troughs, and there was a lack of mattresses in the hospital. The cemetery in the prison camp is a testament to the viciousness of the epidemic. The main entrance to the prison camp is unique in relation to other facilities in that POW's, staff, and visitors had to cross a bridge over the barbed-wire fences.

2138. Entrance to an Escape Tunnel at Zwickau

Notes:
This is the entrance to an escape tunnel through the floor of the French adjutant's room at Zwickau. Tunneling was a popular means of escape for POW's who had expertise in mining and excavation. Large numbers of war prisoners could escape if the tunnel extended beyond the security zone of a prison camp.

Notes:
Photograph of the "Internationale Bibliothek" ("International Library") in the prison camp at Giessen. The walls of the room are loaded with shelves of books and the window is covered with wire netting. The camp library was one of the most popular locations in a prison camp since reading was an important pastime for many POW's.

Austro-Hungarian infantry launch a "storm attack" on an Italian position. A large number of Italian soldiers are already in full flight in the background, fleeing from their defensive positions.
