- This photograph aptly shows the demoralization of Russian soldiers by 1917. Upon hearing news that German cavalry had broken through the lines in Galacia, these infantrymen threw down their arms and fled headlong to the rear past this Polish church.

- A French stringed orchestra, with many of the instruments made by the prisoners themselves, performs on stage outdoors at Stuttgart. A group of French POW's stand to the right. Musical performances played a critical role in terms of improving morale in prison camps.

- While self-government was the foundation of life and camp discipline at the prison camp at Ruhleben, the Germans still spied on the internees to find out what they were doing. In this drawing, a German guard peers through the keyhole to watch men play cards by candlelight.

- French prisoners spread fertilizer on a field with manure from the horse drawn wagon outside of the prison at Friedrichsfeld. The POW's are spreading guano in the field in preparation for spring planting. Prisoner labor was critical in supporting the German war economy.

- A group of Allied officers enjoy a swim in the Elbe on a hot summer day under the watchful eyes of their German guards. The Germans did not take any chances during this excursion away from the prison; note the guard boat in the middle of the river to make sure that there are no long distance swimming records.

- Austrian dragoons intercept and ride down two members of a Russian Cossack patrol. The Austrians have drawn their sabres as the Cossacks flee in terror. Cavalry patrols often captured enemy soldiers surprised by the sudden appearance of dragoons or Uhlans.

- This thirty-plus car train carries thousands of Russian prisoners of war into Austro-Hungarian captivity. The train is crossing a river in the Carpathian Mountains. Both the box cars and open cars are crammed with Russian POW's. The Austrian guards have sentry boxes, which provide them with some relief from the elements.
