3372. A Nestorian Mother & Her Little Girl

Notes:
P. 336-337 "The scene is as grateful as it is novel, in benighted Persia, to behold Nestorian mothers leading their little girls to school, and often lingering, a half hour, with delightful interest, to hear them read. Notwithstanding their hard lots, - their not being allowed to eat with the men-their laboring in the fields- their ignorance and general degradation, Nestorian females still possess some very interesting traits of character. I have never seen mothers more affectionately attached to their children than among this people." This mother is wearing a plaid cloak around her upper body and a plain kerchief on her head. The cloak is worn over a full, wide tunic and trousers. Her little girl is wearing a full length tunic and a long jacket.

3378. YMCA Sign for U.S. Occupation Troops in Coblenz

Notes:
This bill-board stood on the bridge over the Rhine River at Coblenz and provided information for American doughboys, on occupation duty in Germany, regarding social services offered by the YMCA, the Knights of Columbus, the Red Cross, the Jewish Welfare Board, the Salvation Army, and the YWCA. Red Triangle services dwarfed those of the other American welfare agencies as indicated by the programs highlighted on this sign.

3380. POW Garden at Soltau

Notes:
Prisoners augmented their meager diets at Soltau by gardening using seeds provided by a YMCA secretary. Rations could become monotonous in prison camps and fresh vegetables helped improve POW diets.
