3482. A Persian Soldier

Notes:
In this image, a Persian soldier is wearing the short shalwar (Shoberl 1845, p. 113) or shalvar (Vogelsang-Eastwood p. 8) with knee-high boots. His jacket is similar to military wear of European soldiers and is completed by the wearing of a belt and a sash. The headgear of the soldier is very different from that of European soldiers in that it is the same conical, fur cap, kolah namadi (Vogelsang-Eastwood, p. 12), worn by the scribe, priest, and other males pictured in this work. Unlike these other figures, he wears only the mustache.

3483. Leaf from Postille Majores Cum Questionibus

Notes:
A leaf from "Postille Majores Cum Questionibus", "a book of devotions for the whole year, with many marginal notes and 300 questions on the Scriptures", by Pierre Balli. It was printed by Balli at Lyons in 1525. This is an example of the devotional books issued during the 16th Century in France. The illustrative woodcuts and ornamental initials blend with the Gothic type and is generally known as the lettre de forme. This leaf is marked as Fo. XXXIIII on the recto side.

Liturgy O.C.S.O. was published by Gethsemani Abbey, Trappist, KY and edited by Father Chrysogonus Waddell from 1966-1999. The journal (at that time a newsletter) began after September 1965 meeting of the Liturgy Commission of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance to report progress in liturgical renewal after Vatican II. Notes:
A French prisoner feeds the chickens at a prison camp in Germany with a German guard. The chickens provided eggs for the kitchen and meat for the soup. The work is not overly stressful as the French soldier smokes a pipe.

Notes:
French and Russian POW's stroll about the prison compound at the reprisal camp at Szczuezyn in Lithuania in 1916. Both the Allied and Central Powers found that reprisal camps had dubious effects on the foreign and military policies of their opponents.
