- A brief introduction to diurnals and a bibliography (1) is followed (2-63) by a list of Cistercian diurnal manuscripts from the early 12th century – the earliest linked to Robert and Stephen Harding–to 1960. The studies noted include numerous addenda in ink. - This drawing depicts a snow-covered street in the prison camp in Muensingen. Some prisoners are outside enjoying the weather and smoke escapes from the chimneys from the ovens inside the barracks.

- An enterprising businessman at Ruhleben set up this engraving service in a booth and offered free designs to customers. Tradesmen often found their expertise in great demand in prison camps.

- British prisoners eat their lunch of soup at outdoor tables in the compound at Doeberitz. This photograph was taken early in the war as the British soldiers are wearing pre-war issue field hats, are eating outdoors, and live in the tents behind them. The prisoners had not yet constructed the wooden barracks which would be their homes for the rest of the war.

- Russian and French patients in the hospital ward at Friedrichsfeld peel a basket of potatoes outside in the hospital courtyard. Preparing daily rations was a major undertaking in German prison camps.

- Seventeenth-century brown leather boards; raised bands on spine; spine compartments gold-stamped with acanthus leaf ornaments; gold-stamped black leather spine label, with title “S. Bern. Ser. C.D.” Bound in nine gatherings of 10 leaves each., The upper board of a 14th century illuminated Latin manuscript from northern Italy, containing sermons written for monks of the Cistercian abbey of Locedio, near Gorizia in Friuli, by Ogier, Abbot of Locedio (and falsely attributed to another Cistercian, St. Bernard of Clairvaux). Cover is covered in leather with raised bands on spine., and Illegible inscription by former owner (?) in Paris, on inside front cover. Jointly purchased by Western Michigan University and the Newberry Library in 2006.
